New Amex Platinum Card Credits and Annual Fee

american express platinum card amex annual fee

Last updated on April 13th, 2023

After months of speculation, the new annual fee and benefits with the Platinum Card from American Express are finally live. The ultra-premium offering from Amex now features a $695 annual fee and a host of new statement credits from travel to fitness and streaming. Here is everything you need to know about the new American Express Platinum Card features.

New American Express Platinum Card Features

The new features with the Platinum Card are numerous. These include new statement credits, a new Resy membership for improved table booking, and more. Perhaps the most significant talking point, however, is the new annual fee.

The Platinum Card’s New Annual Fee

The major talking point of the new Amex Platinum Card is the staggering annual fee it charges. The previous annual fee – $550 – was already among the highest yearly charges for a card from any issuer, but the new fee – $695 – ups the ante even more.

Amex is also raising the fee for authorized users, with additional cards costing $175 per year. Fortunately, the $175 annual fee applies to the first three extra users, with every card after that incurring an additional $175 per year per card.

American Express Platinum Card Statement Credits

Amex is attempting to compensate for this steep annual fee with several new statement credits. These new credits are in addition to existing credits, such as UberEATS credits each month and the $200 per year airline fee credit covering incidental travel fees on a selected airline of the card member’s choosing.

$300 Equinox Credits

One of the larger credits is a $300 per year Equinox credit. Equinox is an upscale private gym with locations in major cities across the U.S. The new credit provides Platinum Cardholders a $25 credit each month towards Equinox membership and services.

The Equinox credit is one of the more controversial new features as it provides a great headline but very little value. An Equinox membership is approximately $260 per month, with a $500 one-time initiation fee for new members. Because of this steep price, Platinum Card members enjoy very little value from the offer.

$240 Digital Entertainment Credits

The Platinum Card is also offering a new $240 statement credit for select streaming services. Members get up to $20 back each month when they use their card to pay the subscription fee for the following streaming and digital services:

  • Audible
  • SiriusXM
  • Peacock
  • New York Times

The lack of choice with this credit makes it, too, very limited in its value – Another worrying sign for current Platinum Cardholders – and a deterrent for many potential applicants.

$200 Hotel Credit

The new Amex Platinum Card also features a new $200 hotel credit to match its $200 airline incidentals credit. The hotel statement credit applies toward select prepaid bookings through the American Express Travel portal/service. Again, the scope of the credit is very thin, leaving a much-reduced set of options for cardholders versus other ultra-luxury cards on the market.

$179 CLEAR Credit

American Express is also providing a statement credit for CLEAR® membership. CLEAR® uses biometrics to assign users a touchless ID, allowing members to move faster through security at select airports and stadiums across the United States.

The addition of Clear is great since the landing page for the Platinum Card is still showing the original Global Entry or TSA Pre✓ credit as well. This combination makes moving through security a breeze – not just at airports but also at sporting events and concerts.

Is the New Amex Platinum Card Worth the Cost?

Do the new changes to the Amex Platinum Card add up to savings? Probably not. The Equinox and digital entertainment credits add a whopping $540 of “value,” but very little substance. Using the card at Equinox, for example, would result in a net cost of at least $$235 per month for membership – hardly a benefit.

Overall, Amex claims the new card provides over $1,400 in value, but that simply isn’t true. Many of the credits are too narrowly focused – and some aren’t even available to members everywhere (with Equinox and CLEAR being the prominent examples). Other experts (most notably Chuck, from Doctor of Credit) place the real value of the new credits at around $150, and it is hard to disagree.

New Miami Marlins Credit Card from Cardless Launches

Cardless new Miami marlins

Last updated on April 21st, 2023

The Miami Marlins are the latest sports team to join forces for an exclusive co-branded credit card. The new Miami Marlins Credit Card from Cardless offers Marlins fans the chance to “take their fandom beyond the ballpark” thanks to impressive everyday rewards and no annual fee.

Cardless Launches New Miami Marlins Credit Card

Fintech Cardless is continuing to make waves in the sports world, thanks to a new co-branded credit card with the Miami Marlins. The new Miami Marlins Credit Card is the company’s first foray into the world of Major League Baseball, following on earlier efforts with English soccer giants Manchester United and the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Miami Marlins card is, like other Cardless offerings, a Mastercard product that features no annual fee and no hidden fees. And, like the Manchester United and Cavs credit cards, earns accelerated points on gameday and Marlins-associated purchases.

The card earns 5X points on Marlins tickets, 3X on dining (including takeout and delivery), groceries, and drugstores. All other purchases with the card earn a single point per dollar spent, with the rewards taking to form of Home Run Rewards – good for things like gift cards (with additional points value), statement credits, and more. Interestingly, the card also earns 5% cash back (not rewards) on concessions and retail purchases at Marlins Park (now loanDepot Park).

New accounts also enjoy a decent sign-up bonus of 10,000 Home Run Rewards points after making just $1,000 in purchases within the first 90 days of opening an account. This bonus differs from other Cardless products, which offer official jerseys as a sign-up bonus.

About Cardless

Cardless is a fintech company and credit card issuer for some of the most prominent names in the sporting world. Cardless helps brands provide their biggest fans with a credit card experience that is fair, smooth, and more rewarding than other offers on the market. The company offers its credit cards through a dedicated mobile app (currently only iOS is supported) and issued them through First Electronic Bank, Member FDIC.

New Chase Freedom 5% Back on Groceries Offer

chase freedom flex unlimited 5% cash back groceries offer

Last updated on April 26th, 2023

The Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited now offer new cardholders the chance to earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases for their first year. The new grocery store category bonus follows the rollout of the Q3 cash back categories for the Freedom Flex Card. Here is everything you need to know about the new Chase Freedom 5% back on groceries promotion:

Chase Freedom 5% Back On Groceries Offer Details

New Chase Freedom cardholders have a little bit more about which to get excited. Effective immediately, successful Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited applicants will enjoy 5% cash back on grocery store purchases on up to $12,000 spent in the first year. That 5% cash back on the first $1,000 in grocery store spending is in addition to the normal cash back users already earn.

Chase Freedom Unlimited cardholders, for example, earn 3% back on dining (including takeout and delivery services like UbeEATS, GrubHub, and more) and drugstore purchases. All other purchases with the card earn an unlimited 1.5% cash back – with no limit on the number of rewards earnable.

Chase Freedom Unlimited cardholders, for example, earn 3% back on dining (including takeout and delivery services like Uber Eats, GrubHub, and more) and drugstore purchases. All other purchases with the card earn an unlimited 1.5% cash back – with no limit on the number of rewards earnable.

The Freedom Flex is a 5% rotating category card, meaning new cardholders enjoy even more value for no annual fee. The Flex earns 5% back in different categories every quarter, with Q3 2021 including streaming services and groceries. Like the Freedom Unlimited, the Flex also earns 3% back on dining and drugstore purchases, with all other purchases earning 1% back.

Freedom Flex Earns Up to 9% Back on Groceries in Q3

The addition of groceries to the 5% back category doesn’t seem like it would help Flex cardholders in the short term – after all, that bonus category is already covered through the 2022 Cash Back Calendar. However, Chase claims cardmembers can earn cash back on both offers – up to 9% cash back on groceries in Q3 2021.

According to Chase, the new 5% back on groceries for a year promotion can offer up to $1,100 in cash back value to new Freedom Flex cardholders, should they max out the rewards categories:

  • 5% on grocery store purchases (up to $12,000 in the first year): $600 in cash back
  • 5% on rotating Q3 categories like select streaming services, grocery stores, and more (up to $1,500): $300 back
  • The additional $200 sign-up bonus when you spend $500 in the first three months of account opening.

How Long Does the 5% Back on Groceries Promotion Run?

The Chase Freedom groceries promotion officially launched on July 1, 2021. The program runs for the first year of a new account from date of approval. How long Chase will offer the promotion, however, remains to be seen. There is no set timetable for the removal of the deal, but it is always best to jump on these types of offers if they are of interest.

The Best Credit Cards for Fourth of July

Last updated on April 3rd, 2024

Credit cards are an American invention, making them the perfect fit for any Fourth of July celebration. Credit cards can help you save money through rewards, pay over time, and provide the purchase protections you need – making them an essential part of any holiday preparations. Here are some of our top picks for the best credit cards for your Fourth of July celebrations in 2021.

The Best Credit Cards for Fourth of July 2021

Here are our top credit card picks for celebrating the 4th of July this year:

The Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Card is one of the best dining and entertainment credit cards on the market today – making it perfect for the 4th of July, a day synonymous with fun and family. The card earns an impressive 4% cash back on dining and entertainment, 2% at grocery stores, and 1% on all other purchases.

The Savor Card easily recoups that $95 yearly charge with just $198 in dining purchases every month (as seen in our comprehensive review). That roughly $200 per month requirement can be easily met in July thanks to the 4th holiday – and the need to stock up on burgers, buns, beers – or whatever else your Fourth celebrations require!

And since the card also earns 2% back on groceries, it offers plenty of value for those who prefer to dine out (or in). The Savor also comes with a complementary food delivery membership through Postmates – just in case you don’t feel like cooking.

The Savor is a better choice for the Fourth of July than the American Express Blue Cash Preferred, its closest rival, thanks to that PostMates membership, the greater acceptance of Mastercard/Visa over Amex by U.S. and global merchants, and the $300 cash back sign-up bonus after spending $3,000 within the first three months of account opening.

Related Cards

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature is a great card for any event, thanks to its impressive 5% back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Markets. So, it’s no surprise to see the card on the Best Credit Cards for Fourth of July 2021 list.

Given that Amazon has practically anything you might need for a Fourth of July celebration, the card is an excellent value – mainly since it features no annual fee (minus an Amazon Prime subscription – currently valued at $12.99 per month, or $119 per year).

Other features of the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature include:

  • 2% cash back at restaurants and gas stations
  • 1% back on all other purchases
  • No foreign transaction fees

Don’t have Prime but still want to earn savings at Amazon and Whole Foods? The Amazon Rewards Visa, also from Chase, offers. 3% back on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market purchases, plus 2% back on restaurants, gas stations, and drug store purchases – all for no annual fee or additional Prime membership charges.

Related Cards

The Venmo Visa is a great choice for consumers who want to earn decent cash back, but don’t want to be tied down to specific spending categories every month. The card, from Synchrony, offers up to 3% cash back on purchases, with rewards automatically calculated and debited into the associated Venmo account.

Cardholders earn 3% back on their top spending category each billing period, followed by 2% in their second-most used category. All other purchases with the Venmo Visa earn 1% cash back. The cash back categories eligible for the 3% back and 2% back with Venmo include:

  • Transportation
  • Travel
  • Groceries
  • Entertainment
  • Dining & Nightlife
  • Bills & Utilities
  • Health & Beauty
  • Gas
  • Other

The Venmo Visa is similar to the Bank of America® Cash Rewards Credit Card, which also offers up to 3% back on flexible categories – but with a reduced number of options to select from:

  • Gas
  • Online shopping
  • Travel
  • Dining
  • Drug stores
  • Home improvement

Additionally, Bank of America has slightly higher credit score requirements for applicants than Synchrony Bank, which typically offers their cards to people with average (or fair) credit scores, as well as good/excellent credit scores. Because of this difference, the Venmo Visa gets the edge.

Honorable Mentions

Want some more Fourth of July credit card options to consider? Here are two cards that just missed out on our top spots:

Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Secured Card

The Customized Cash Rewards Secured Card offers all of the above-mentioned BOA Customized Cash Rewards Card benefits, but for people rebuilding their credit score (or with no prior credit history). Alliant Making Changes to 2.5% Cash Back Credit Card

alliant makes changes to 2.5% cash back visa signature credit card

Last updated on April 13th, 2023

The Alliant Cashback Visa Signature Credit Card is one of the most lucrative cash back credit cards on the market today. From Chicago-based credit union, Alliant Credit Union, the card earns 2.5% cash back on the first $10,000 in spending each billing period for an annual fee of $99. Now, Alliant is looking to waive the annual fee but keep the 2.5% cash back intact – here are all the details:

Alliant Introduces New Cash Back Rewards Structure

Most flat-rate cash back cards offer 1.5% back on purchases, with a notable selection offer up to 2% back. Those 2% cash back cards include the Citi® Double Cash Card and the TD Double Up Cards – both of which are among the best cash back credit cards from major banks.

However, perhaps the best cash back credit card comes from a credit union – Alliant, to be precise. The Alliant Cashback Visa Signature Credit Card offers a near-unlimited 2.5% cash back on all purchases for a relatively modest $99 annual fee.

Alliant has no removed the $99 annual fee for the Cashback Visa Signature, while keeping the 2.5% cash back – a huge development for those that want the very best in rewards but don’t want a fee for those rewards. Instead, the credit union is shifting towards a tiered rewards system that provides 2.5% back for the highest spenders and a more modest 1.5% cash back for entry-level cardholders.

Alliant’s New Cash Back Rewards Structure

The new Alliant cash back rewards system consists of two tiers.

Tier One Cash Back Rewards

The first tier, tier one, earns the same 2.5% cash back on the first $10,000 in spending in a billing period as the previous system. Once a cardholder exceeds the $10,000 monthly spending limit, all other purchases will earn an unlimited 1.5% cash back.

Reaching this tier is a fairly simple task. Alliant requires cardholders to have an Alliant high yield checking account and maintain an average daily balance of $1,000 for the quarter prior to the billing statement the rewards are earned. If they meet these requirements, the user earns 2.5% back on the next billing period.

Tier Two Cash Back Rewards

The second tier of the program earns unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases and is available to new customers and those who do not meet the checking account requirements in the previous quarter.

Except for existing Alliant Credit Union members, this second tier is the likely starting point for most applicants to the Alliant Cashback Visa Signature. Still, the 1.5% cash back for the first quarter is a solid earning rate for no annual fee.

Alliant High Yield Checking

Alliant’s high yield checking account is also a great deal for potential customers. The account features an Annual Percentage Yield (APY) about 8X higher than the national average (currently set at 0.25% APY, compared to the average of 0.04% APY). The checking account also comes with access to over 80,000 fee-free ATMs throughout the United States, a contactless debit card, and no monthly fees or balance requirements.

Industry Report on Benefits of Credit Card Rewards

industry-report-on-benefits-of-credit-card-rewards

Last updated on February 20th, 2024

Credit card rewards are one of the most enticing reasons why consumers consider applying for a new credit card. A report from the American Bankers Association highlights the impressive benefits credit card rewards offer – not only to consumers across both income and credit score spectrums, but also to merchants.

New Report Sings Praises of Credit Card Rewards

A new report from the American Bankers Association (ABA) highlights the benefits of credit card rewards. The study highlights the critical role credit card rewards play in business, with both merchants and consumers benefiting from rewards programs.

The ABA report states that “(credit) card rewards are accessible, valuable, and well-understood by consumers, across all income levels.” One of the study’s surprising findings was the lack of correlation between income, credit scores, and revolving card balances.

The report highlights a misapprehension from some experts that credit card rewards act like a “reverse Robin Hood subsidy” that benefits wealthier Americans more than those with lower income levels. Instead, the findings indicate that a person’s risk score is a better indicator of their likelihood of carrying a balance rather than their income.

Merchants Benefit from Rewards as Much as Shoppers

The report also argues, “credit card reward programs benefit consumers of all incomes as well as merchants who accept credit cards. Through higher purchase values, increased security, lower risks, and avoided costs of cash, merchants benefit substantially from the existence of credit card rewards programs.”

Interestingly, the ABA study also indicates little evidence of long-held beliefs that merchants pass on the additional costs of credit card acceptance to consumers. This finding results from the overall benefits of wider credit card acceptance, which often easily offsets the costs of accepting more expensive payment networks like American Express.

Hilton Honors Removes 11 Transfer Partners

hilton removes 11 transfer partners from honors program

The Hilton Honors loyalty program just lost some value. The program recently removed 11 transfer partners, including major airlines like Frontier, LATAM, Avianca, and Alaska Airlines. Here is what you need to know about the Hilton Honors transfer partner removals, which were made without warning earlier this month.

Hilton Honors Removes Multiple Transfer Partners

Hilton has dropped 11 transfer partners from its Hilton Honors loyalty program. The changes to the Hilton Honors program are effective June 15, 2021 and were made with no forward notice to existing program members.

According to a notice on the loyalty program’s transfer points page, members can no longer transfer Honors points to the following (former) transfer partners:

  • Amtrak
  • Aeroflot
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Avianca
  • Finnair
  • Frontier Airlines
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • LATAM
  • Philippine Airlines
  • South African Airlines

The loss of nearly a dozen transfer partners (including ten airlines and Amtrak) impacts the value of Hilton Honors points. The removal also reduces the transfer options for members, with 13 remaining carriers, including:

  • Aeromexico
  • All Nippon Airways
  • Asiana Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Delta
  • Etihad
  • Malaysian Airlines
  • Qatar Airlines
  • Qantas
  • United Airlines
  • Virgin

How to Redeem Hilton Honors Points

Transferring Hilton Honors points to other programs (especially frequent flyer programs) offers one of the lowest redemption methods for points. This redemption method offers lower value than using points towards free nights with the 15 brands that make up the Hilton Worldwide Holdings portfolio.

While Hilton claims that reward nights start as low as 5,000 points, most free nights usually cost between 30,000 and 40,000 points. Hilton points currently have an approximate value of 0.06 cents/point, which is on the lower end of the hotel rewards points scale. This valuation places an award night at around $225 to $240 in points.

Revolut Seeks to Streamline Money Transfers to Mexico

Last updated on April 21st, 2023

U.K.-based fintech Revolut is seeking to improve the money transfer process across the U.S. and Mexico border. The company is launching its Revolut platform in Mexico, allowing users to easily send funds to over 35 countries worldwide at no cost.

Revolut Seeks to Expand International Reach

Revolut, a leading U.K. fintech, seeks to expand its international reach through a new launch in Mexico. The Revolut platform offers users free money transfers when sending funds to other platform users. Those money transfers occur at interbank rates, saving users significant money.

The launch of the Revolut platform in Mexico is the latest step in an impressive spurt of growth for the company, which offers a variety of financial services in over 35 countries across the globe. The company, which launched in the United States last year, also provides budgeting tools and single-use debit card numbers (also known as virtual card numbers).

The success of the Revolut platform in the U.S. has led to a desire to introduce more products and services to the American market. The company recently submitted an application for a U.S. banking license, opening up the possibilities for credit cards and other services in the future.

“Targeted to Ex-Pats”

The new Mexico launch of the Revolut platform is part of the company’s plans to tap the U.S.- Mexico corridor, which Chief Financial Officer Mikko Salovaara claims is the top remittance corridor globally.

“The proposition is especially targeted to ex-pats,” Salovaara said in a piece in MarketWatch. The company has noticed a correlation between experiencing its foreign exchange features and continued use of other Revolut platform features, critical for future growth.

“The point for us is if we can get users to deposit salaries into our accounts and have a balance with that, we benefit in a myriad of ways,” Salovaara said since this would open the chance for further growth in subscriber trading activity and other activities.

Mexico: a Booming Fintech Market

Mexico is one of the fastest-growing fintech and e-commerce markets in the world, with multiple companies jockeying for position in the burgeoning marketplace. For instance, Mexico City-based fintech startup Stori is seeking to improve access to credit by offering new ways to underwrite credit cards to underserved populations throughout Mexico.

Five Signs You Might Have Too Many Credit Cards

five-signs-you-might-have-too-many-credit-cards

Last updated on August 24th, 2023

Credit card offers are everywhere – both online and when shopping in-store. You can even get offers when flying, thanks to many airlines offering co-branded cards through major banks like Chase, American Express, Barclays, and others. With so many offers available it can be easy to acquire more credit cards than you need. Here are five tell-tale signs that you might have too many credit cards:

#1: You Struggle to Remember Which Store Cards You Have

One of the easiest ways to tell you currently have too many credit cards is that you can’t recall which stores you actually have some from. Retail credit cards are everywhere – both closed-loop and open-loop. Because so many stores offer credit cards – and ask customers if they’d like to apply in-store for instant rebates – it’s easy to rack up a considerable number of cards.

Having to sort through dozens of cards in your wallet (or even your sock drawer) when purchasing to see if you have a retail companion for that store is frustrating – and a sign of being far too deep into the credit cards rabbit hole. Instead, consider shifting your spending to a general-purpose rewards alternative, such as a cash back or travel card.

#2: You Have Difficulty Keeping Track of Rewards Programs

Do you have multiple rewards cards but struggle to keep track of how those rewards programs operate and where your best redemption values lie? Understanding the best redemption value for rewards can be tricky even with the simplest of rewards programs, so holding too many credit cards can only make matters worse.

#3: The Rewards You Are Earning Aren’t Enough for Redemptions You Want

Similarly, a sure sign of having more credit cards than you need is that some of your cards just don’t provide enough value to make them worthwhile. Most programs require a minimum number of points or cash back before you can redeem, making them difficult to justify for those who simply do not spend enough to cash out.

General travel cards or cash back rewards programs usually don’t have too many issues, as the rewards earned never expire. However, some retail card rewards systems have relatively quick shelf-life, meaning points may expire in a year (or even less).

#4: You Keep Paying Late Payment Fees

Several credit cards means multiple monthly payments (if you use all of them, that is). And multiple payments each month can quickly lead to forgetting to make some payments – and that means late fees and potentially penalty APRs. If you find yourself struggling with late fees, missing payments, or even consistently making payments within the grace period window, you might have too many credit cards.

#5: Banks and Retailers Begin Rejecting Your New Credit Card Applications

Maybe you keep finding your new credit card applications turned down, even though you have a good credit score. Various factors play into how banks and lenders judge creditworthiness, with one factor your seeking of new credit.

Opening many new credit accounts in a short window is a major red flag for banks, as it may indicate you are struggling for money and have an over-reliance on credit. “New credit” accounts for 10% of your FICO Score and a whopping 30% of your VantageScore. So, if your credit card applications are being rejected, it may be a sign that you have far too many cards – and need to take a break from getting more.
