The Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited now offer new cardholders the chance to earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases for their first year. The new grocery store category bonus follows the rollout of the Q3 cash back categories for the Freedom Flex Card. Here is everything you need to know about the new Chase Freedom 5% back on groceries promotion:

Chase Freedom 5% Back On Groceries Offer Details

New Chase Freedom cardholders have a little bit more about which to get excited. Effective immediately, successful Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited applicants will enjoy 5% cash back on grocery store purchases on up to $12,000 spent in the first year. That 5% cash back on the first $1,000 in grocery store spending is in addition to the normal cash back users already earn.

Chase Freedom Unlimited cardholders, for example, earn 3% back on dining (including takeout and delivery services like UbeEATS, GrubHub, and more) and drugstore purchases. All other purchases with the card earn an unlimited 1.5% cash back – with no limit on the number of rewards earnable.

The Freedom Flex is a 5% rotating category card, meaning new cardholders enjoy even more value for no annual fee. The Flex earns 5% back in different categories every quarter, with Q3 2021 including streaming services and groceries. Like the Freedom Unlimited, the Flex also earns 3% back on dining and drugstore purchases, with all other purchases earning 1% back.

Freedom Flex Earns Up to 9% Back on Groceries in Q3

The addition of groceries to the 5% back category doesn’t seem like it would help Flex cardholders in the short term – after all, that bonus category is already covered through the 2022 Cash Back Calendar. However, Chase claims cardmembers can earn cash back on both offers – up to 9% cash back on groceries in Q3 2021.

According to Chase, the new 5% back on groceries for a year promotion can offer up to $1,100 in cash back value to new Freedom Flex cardholders, should they max out the rewards categories:

  • 5% on grocery store purchases (up to $12,000 in the first year): $600 in cash back
  • 5% on rotating Q3 categories like select streaming services, grocery stores, and more (up to $1,500): $300 back
  • The additional $200 sign-up bonus when you spend $500 in the first three months of account opening.

How Long Does the 5% Back on Groceries Promotion Run?

The Chase Freedom groceries promotion officially launched on July 1, 2021. The program runs for the first year of a new account from date of approval. How long Chase will offer the promotion, however, remains to be seen. There is no set timetable for the removal of the deal, but it is always best to jump on these types of offers if they are of interest.
