Bilt Mastercard

You might be wondering why a credit card for rent is on the “Best Father’s Day Credit Cards” list, but if you are serious about saving money – it should be front and center. The Bilt Mastercard from Wells Fargo is a first-of-its-kind rewards credit card that provides reward points on rent payments with no annual fee.

Cardholders earn 1X points on rent payments (up to 50,000 points each calendar year). Even better, that rewards haul doesn’t depend on your home being in the Blackstone Group – if your landlord doesn’t accept card payments, Bilt will mail a physical check – meaning you’re never not earning!

The Bilt Mastercard also earns impressive points on other everyday purchases. The card earns 3X points on dining purchases, including takeout and delivery services. The card also earns double points (2X per $1 spent) on travel purchases booked directly with an airline, hotel, car rental or cruise line. To earn rewards the cardholder must make at least five purchases with the card each month – a fairly simple task.

So, thinking about taking your dad out for dinner this Father’s Day? Use Bilt and treat yourself, too.

TD Clear

The TD Clear credit card is a unique credit card that eschews APR, instead relying on a monthly fee. Cardholders select from two credit card products with a different credit limits and, as such, a different monthly service fee:

Credit limit $1,000 $2,000
Monthly fee $10 $20
Predictable monthly payments $45 $70

So why is TD Clear a great option for Father’s Day? Because sometimes Father’s Day (or any other celebratory holiday) can get expensive, so having the option to pay a reasonable, manageable monthly fee over an APR that continues to soar as inflation climbs.  Keep in mind, however, that the two credit lines with the Clear credit card are fairly small, so using too much of that available credit can harm your credit score by increasing your overall credit use.

Get 50 Cents Off Each Gallon of Gas with BPme Visa

BP Visa credit card special offer 50 Cents Off per gallon

Last updated on September 6th, 2023

If BP or Amoco is your go-to gas stop, consider this your lucky day. Until August 1, 2023, new BPme Rewards Visa cardholders enjoy 50 cents off each gallon of fuel at both brands for the first 90 days after account opening. Sounds too good to believe? It isn’t – find out more below:

BP Visa Offers a Huge Welcome Bonus

Are you considering getting a new gas credit card? If so, BP hopes to win your business with a new, limited-time offer. From May 3 to August 1 this summer, bp is offering new BPme Rewards Visa cardholders 50 cents off per gallon on every gallon at bp and Amoco during the first 60 days. To take advantage, you must apply for the BP Visa by August 1 to be eligible for the introductory bonus.

That welcome offer – 30 cents off per gallon for every $100 spent at BP for the first 90 days from account opening –  lasts for an additional month, however. Still, with summer travel getting ready to ramp up significantly, savings of half a dollar can impact stretched finances.

The BPme Rewards Visa is a no annual fee co-branded credit card that is issued through First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO). The card provides lucrative cash back rewards on purchases at bp and Amoco – or anywhere Visa is accepted. Cardholders save 15 cents per gallon every time of fuel they pump at BP and Amoco stations. They’ll also earn cash back on the following eligible purchases:

  • 5% cash back on non-fuel purchases at bp and Amoco
  • 3% cash back on dining and grocery store purchases
  • 1% cash back on purchases made everywhere else Visa credit cards are accepted

Cash back rewards with the BP Visa are redeemed as a statement credit or for gift cards. While this redemption process won’t offer access to first-class airfare or things like that, it does help save you money on your commute – or anywhere else the road takes you.

Here’s how the BPme Visa credit card compares with two other popular gas rewards credit cards:

Credit Card and Personal Loan Balances Trend Record Highs

Credit Card and Personal Loan Balances Trend Record Highs

Last updated on January 29th, 2024

The new 2023 report from TransUnion brings to light the current trends among U.S. consumer balances among credit cards, personal loans, and bank cards. Here’s what you need to know about the new reporting.

Record High Credit Card and Personal Loan Balances

Credit card and personal loan balances have now reached record highs or near-record highs. The recent release of the Q1 2023 Quarterly Credit Industry Insights Report (CIIR) from TransUnion has provided deep insight into the state of the consumer’s current relationship with credit cards, personal loans, and more. To no surprise, inflation and high-interest rates have driven consumers to skyrocket their balances to make ends meet by turning to credit to support household budgets.

Credit Card Trends

Credit card balances remain at a record high of $917 billion. While balances have been slightly down by 1.5%, quarter-after-quarter, the overall year-over-year (YoY) has increased by almost 20%. Credit card balances typically trend down during the first quarter due to tax season. During this season consumers receive their tax refund and use it to pay down existing credit card debt but overall remains high in comparison to the prior year.

Unsecured Personal Loan Trends

Similarly, unsecured personal loan balances have also reached a high point in Q1. The balances for unsecured personal loans have reached a high of $225 billion. To break it down further, that is an increase of 26.3% year-over-year. However, the results of Q1 are the second consecutive quarter that shows a slowdown in year-over-year growth rates.

This could mean lenders are showing strict analysis while making underwriting decisions. The average unsecured personal loan balances since 2005 are $11,281. Credit-wise, subprime consumers resulted in the highest increase in balances by 40%. Followed by super prime at 34%. And coming in at the lowest balances is the super prime consumers with increases just under 20%.

Bankcard Trends

Furthermore, bankcard balances were also analyzed at a record high of $917 billion, a 19.2% YoY growth. Similar to credit card balance trends, bankcards also experience a seasonal dip and Q1 is the second consecutive quarter to show a slight balance decrease by 1.5% (quarter-over-quarter).

The report also found subprime share consumers with a balance declined by 10.2% from 10.9% the previous quarter. The balance for super prime consumers increased to 41.8%, up from 40.6% in the former quarter. The share of balances for Millennials has increased up to 28.6% in Q1 2023, from 26.5% in 2022.

Credit Lines on the Rise

Balances are not the only numbers on the rise, so are credit lines. In Q1 2023, credit lines reached $4.4 trillion with a 9.7% increase. The growth was observed among all consumers, but 60% of the increase was driven by super-prime borrowers.

4 Ways To Stay Educated On Financial Literacy

4 Ways to Stay Educated On Financial Literacy

Last updated on August 23rd, 2023

Understanding your finances makes a world of difference when it comes to managing your money responsibly. Knowledge is power and the same applies when you want to feel powerful and confident about your money choices. Here are four ways you can stay educated on financial literacy for improved savings, budgeting, and investing skills.

Improve Your Financial Knowledge With Educational Content

Money talk can sometimes feel intimidating because we may not be familiar with the topic. However, seeking education on personal finances will help you become secure with your money management choices. Use resources like social media, podcasts, and more to finetune your financial literacy education.

Subscribe to Financial Content

Digital media consumption statistics show that we spend, on average, 508 minutes per day consuming media online. That is over eight hours a day – you might as well use this time wisely and pledge your time to financial content. Digital media is all around us in the form of social media, video, and more. If you find yourself diving into video, consider YouTube to seek out content that can help keep you in the know on personal finance today. There are various YouTube Channels (ours included) full of free educational information on the money topics you may wish to brush up on.

Social media is another easy way to consume educational content that can support your financial literacy. Follow accounts on socials like Instagram where you can get tips and advice on various topics ranging from budgeting and saving to investing and more. It can also help keep you up to date with the latest news and trends in personal finance on topics like credit cards, credit score advice, debt management, and more.

Read Financial Books

While digital media is at the top of its game, a good old-fashioned book is an education-worthy option for those who prefer it. A book on financial literacy will give you a more detailed and insightful look into various financial topics from professionals in the field of money. You might find personal finance books written by professionals like accountants, financial advisors, investors, and more. Here’s a list curated by TheBalanceMoney.com for some of the best personal finance books on the market today.

“Why Didn’t They Teach Me This in School?” by Cary Siegel “Rich Dad Poor Dad," by Robert Kiyosaki “The Total Money Makeover.” by Dave Ramsey
“The Automatic Millionaire,” by David Bach “Broke Millennial” by Erin Lowry “The One-Page Financial Plan” by Carl Richards
"I Will Teach You to Be Rich," by Ramit Sethi “Clever Girl Finance” by Bola Sokunbi “The Psychology of Money'' by Vicki Robin

Listen to Podcast

As an extension of digital media content, podcasts are for the listeners. This is for the multitasker, the person on the go, a podcast is a perfect way to consume the information you need on financial literacy while you go on about your daily responsibilities. The convenience of listening to podcasts is its audio versatility. You can listen to podcasts while you commute, during workouts at the gym, while you cook dinner, and possibly even while you work (if your job allows).

Likewise, if you prefer books but don’t have the time to sit down and read, an audiobook may solve this issue. Treat the audiobook like a podcast and listen while you work or at home while you clean, or whenever you can squeeze in extra listening time.

Speak to a Financial Professional

Lastly, stay educated about financial literacy by speaking to a financial professional. It is common for banks and credit unions to provide resources and tools that can help manage your money. Some might offer services where you can speak to a financial professional like an advisor, to give you guidance on how to manage your finances and even on how to invest.

The Bottom Line

We have covered ways to stay educated on financial literacy via social media, video, podcasts, books, and by talking to professionals. It is important to stay active in your finances to build healthy money habits that can positively impact your daily comforts. Likewise, it can help you feel confident and prepared for any of life’s financial challenges that you may face.

TD Clear Vs. Upgrade Cash Rewards Visa®: Read This Before Applying

TD Clear Vs. Upgrade Cash Rewards Visa®: Read This Before Applying

Last updated on February 15th, 2024

When finding the best credit card for you, you must do your homework first. The TD Clear Visa and Upgrade Visa with Cash Rewards are two popular low APR credit card options, but which is best? Here is everything you need to know to find your best credit card offer:

Upgrade Cash Rewards Visa® or TD Clear: Which Is Right for You?

Before deciding which credit card is right for you, the Upgrade Cash Rewards Visa or the TD Clear Visa from TD Bank, here is a detailed breakdown of the cards, their features, and their suitability:

Pre-Qualification Before Applying

Applying for a credit card requires a credit check. Often, these credit checks (or credit inquiries) are known as “hard inquiries,” meaning the bank pulls your full credit report before approving (or denying) your credit card application. If you apply for a credit card and are declined, your credit score will likely take a minor hit. One way to avoid a negative impact on your credit score before getting a new credit card is by pre-qualifying before you apply.

TD Bank offers pre-qualification but only offers via mail or e-mail or to existing customers through their online accounts. This is frustrating if you don’t already bank with TD but are interested in knowing if you qualify for the card before applying.

Fortunately, Upgrade provides a simple, online pre-qualification before applying. Once you click through to the Upgrade application page, you can check your suitability for any of the three Upgrade credit cards by entering your name, address, date of birth, and annual income.

Related Article: How to Pre-Qualify for a Credit Card

Credit Score Needed

Both credit cards typically require a “good” or “excellent” credit score, meaning a FICO Score of 670+ is the minimum you should expect to have before applying. The Upgrade Card, however, also offers products to customers with “average credit,” so a FICO Score of 640+ might be acceptable for approval.

However, remember that your credit score is only one part of the equation. Banks also consider other factors, including how your income compares to your debt obligations and your overall ability to make monthly credit card payments.

How to Apply

Most credit card applications from major issuers are similar. Here is what you can expect from the application process with all three cards – including what information is needed:

Info Explained
① Full legal name and contact information You'll need your full legal name, contact address, phone number, and e-mail address to apply for pretty much every credit card.
② Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) Most credit card issuers require applicants to have a U.S. Social Security number to apply for a credit card. Since foreign citizens likely lack an SNN, they may receive an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) instead. An ITIN is an ID number the IRS issues to anyone who needs to file income tax returns in the United States but doesn’t qualify for an SSN. Be ready to provide either of these items when applying for a personal credit card.

The following banks accept foreign national applicants with an ITIN number, according to Experian:

  • American Express
  • Bank of America
  • Capital One
  • Chase
  • Citibank
  • OpenSky
  • Wells Fargo

Currently, only two major card issuers don’t allow applicants with an ITIN:

  • Barclays
  • Discover
③ Income You'll need to provide income information when applying for a credit card. Banks like to see that you aren't too stretched financially, and part of this process is by evaluating how much income you have from things like your job, investments, and other sources.
④ Expenses Your monthly expenses are the second part of the puzzle when it comes to gauging your risk as an applicant. Your monthly housing costs (rent, mortgage) current utilities, and other relevant info might be asked when you apply.
⑤ Credit Score The final piece of informational lender needs to judge a credit card application is your credit score. Much of the information in your credit report is supplied by creditors and lenders, and potential lenders will use these details as a point of reference when considering you for a loan or line of credit. Your credit report is prepared and sold to prospective lenders and creditors by three credit reporting agencies – or bureaus, as they’re also known. They are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Annual Fee

Both cards feature no annual fee, which is common for most low APR credit cards. You should never pay an annual fee on a low APR or balance transfer credit card.

APR

Now, for the meat of the comparison – the APR with both cards. Here, the cards are very different, providing unique approaches toward credit card APR.

Pay No Interest with TD Clear

The TD Clear Card is a credit card with no APR. That’s right, with TD Clear, you’ll pay 0% interest on purchases. The TD Clear is a subscription-based Visa credit card with a straightforward monthly fee. Clear cardholders pay a monthly subscription fee and another charge based on the amount of the credit line they use. This charge and the subscription fee combine into something TD Bank terms “predictable minimum payments.”

Here are those credit line options:

Credit limit $1,000 $2,000
Monthly fee $10 $20

The no annual fee Upgrade Cards offer an everyday APR that is significantly lower than the national average. Conversely, Upgrade is more geared toward paying down balances than paying no interest on payments, like TD Clear.

Upgrade cardholders can use their line of credit to make purchases anywhere Visa is accepted worldwide. They can also have some of the funds from their credit line transferred to their bank account to help tackle existing debt. This latter method makes the card a useful alternative for a balance transfer credit card.

Cardholders can use their line of credit to make purchases anywhere Visa is accepted worldwide. They can also have some of the funds from their credit line transferred to their bank account to help tackle existing debt. According to Upgrade research, paying a $10,000 balance takes just a few years with the Upgrade Visa, compared with other traditional credit cards that can take up to 20 years – or more.

Rewards

A great, low interest rate is a reward in and of itself, but can you earn additional rewards with either card? The TD Clear does not earn rewards on purchases, instead focusing on no APR. Upgrade, on the other hand, offers rewards on all three of its credit card products. Each Upgrade Card earns cash back rewards on purchases. Here are the earning rates of the cards:

Chase Sapphire Lounge Opens at Boston Airport

Last updated on September 6th, 2023

Chase’s Sapphire Lounge at Boston Logan International Airport is now open. The doors to the first domestic airport lounge bearing the Chase Sapphire branding opened on Tuesday, May 16, follows on the successful launch of the Hong Kong International Airport late last year.

Chase Launches First US Lounge

The first Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club in the United States has finally opened. The Sapphire Lounge by The Club in Boston highlights the history and identity of Boston while providing the exceptional service that makes the Chase Sapphire brand so iconic.

The Chase lounges are similar to other airport lounges on your global travels. This means weary flyers can expect the following when they check-in:

Chase Sapphire Lounge Amenities
Locally curated menus and art Spaces for relaxing and working Fresh and seasonal dining options Signature cocktails, local beer, and a curated wine list
Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi An in-lounge digital experience for food and beverage orders, as well as access to media and entertainment Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free menu options and complimentary refreshments (soft drinks and alcoholic drinks) Admission via a quick, contactless scan

About Chase’s Boston Lounge

The 11,640 square foot lounge, located in the Terminal B to C Connector, between gates B40 and B39, provides distinct areas for recharging, including two wellness rooms that feature anti-gravity massage chairs and guided meditations from Master Well-Being Educator & Healer Devi Brown, a private nursing suite, two dual-head shower rooms, and all-gender restrooms stocked with Apotheke products.

Featuring a locally inspired dining experience that includes menu items from acclaimed Boston chef Douglass Williams (of Boston’s MIDA and APIZZA), a signature taproom offering local craft beer and coffee from Beverly, Massachusetts Atomic Coffee Roasters, at the Sapphire Lounge travelers are encouraged to refuel before takeoff while enjoying spaces designed to highlight and celebrate Boston culture.

The beautifully designed space, which offers direct views of the Boston Logan airfield and the iconic Boston Harbor, is accented by artwork, including work from Boston-based artist Silvia López Chavez and hand-selected pieces from the JPMorgan Chase & Co. private art collection, including work from emerging artists like Cig Harvey, Pelle Cass, Gohar Dashti and Daniel Gordon.

“Elevated Airport Lounges”

The Sapphire Lounges aims to provide an airport experience akin to the famed Centurion Louges operated by American Express. And it is this commitment to excellence that will ensure eligible travelers get the most out of their brief stay.

“Chase Sapphire is leading the charge when it comes to creating one-of-a-kind opportunities for its travelers, and our new lounge in Boston paves the way for Sapphire’s benefits to enhance our cardmembers’ airport experience,” said Dana Pouwels, Managing Director, Sapphire Lounge General Manager and Head of Chase Sapphire Partnerships. “Sapphire Reserve cardmembers are travelers by nature, so we’re upgrading their travel journey with elevated airport lounges that unlock new dining, wellness, and cultural experiences.”

“Our Sapphire Lounges are part of our commitment to elevate the travel journey for Chase cardmembers,” added Allison Beer, CEO of Card Services and Connected Commerce at JPMorgan Chase & Co. “Our goal for Chase Travel is to mirror our investment in high-tech travel platforms with the high-touch experience that you see in our Sapphire lounges today.”

Future Sapphire Lounge Locations

Chase has plans to open nearly ten airport lounges across the world. The bank launched its first Sapphire Lounge last October in Hong Kong. But while the Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) locations are the first, many are opening very soon. Here are all the planned Chase Sapphire Lounge locations:

Airport Location Availability
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) Terminal 1 Open
Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) Terminal B/C connector Open
Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) Terminal 1 Coming soon
New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) Terminal B Coming soon
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) Terminal D/E connector Coming soon
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) Terminal 4 South Coming soon
San Diego International Airport (SAN) Terminal 2 West Coming soon
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) Terminal A Coming soon

While the Boston-Logan Sapphire Lounge is the first in the country, it isn’t the only Chase airport amenity in the United States. Chase also operates a Chase Sapphire Terrace at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). That location opened a few months ago and offers a combined indoor-outdoor space covering approximately 5,000 square feet, with 80% of that being an outdoor terrace.

Lounge Access Rules

Access to the Chase Sapphire Lounges is complimentary for eligible JP Morgan Chase customers. Chase Sapphire Reserve, J.P. Morgan Reserve, and Ritz-Carlton credit card customers enjoy complimentary access. Lounge access is also available to authorized users on those card accounts. It’s worth noting that eligible Chase credit card accounts must also activate their complimentary Priority Pass membership to enter.

Guest Rules

Airport lounge access is excellent when flying solo, but you can really make the most of the impressive facilities when you travel with friends or family. So, what are the guest entry regulations for the Sapphire Lounges?
