What is a Dining Credit Card?
Dining rewards are quickly becoming the most sought-after bonus category in credit cards. A dining credit card is just that – a credit card that offers savings, rewards, and discounts when dining out at a restaurant. Dining, or restaurant credit cards may also apply towards takeout and delivery purchases making them extremely versatile credit cards for those who enjoy dining out, entertaining, or even just vegging on the couch with a movie.
Why Choose a Dining Credit Card?
The most obvious reason to choose a dining card over another type of rewards credit card is because you love to dine out. Everyone has to eat – so why not get rewarded when purchasing your next meal? Dining credit cards provide accelerated rewards to cardholders in select food-related categories – usually restaurants, takeout, and select delivery services (UberEATS, Grubhub, etc.).
Dining and restaurant credit cards are very similar to general rewards cards in that they offer accelerated rewards on key categories (in this case, food), and a flat rate (typically 1% back or 1X points) on all other purchases.
How to Select the Best Restaurant & Dining Credit Card
With so many offers available, how can you find the right dining card for you? Here are a few easy ways to evaluate which credit card suits you best.
How Do You Spend Your Money?
When choosing a new rewards credit card, the most important thing to consider is where you plan to use it. Rewards cards come in several types and amounts. Dining, restaurant, and takeaway credit cards only make sense if your spending habits align with the card rewards structure–especially if the card charges an annual fee.
The Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Card is one of the best dining and entertainment credit cards on the market today. The card, which carries a relatively modest $95 annual fee, earns an impressive 4% cash back on dining and entertainment, 2% at grocery stores, and 1% on all other purchases.
The Savor may make sense for its $95 annual fee if you plan on maximizing those dining and entertainment purchases. If not, however, a no annual fee card, like the SavorOne or the Citi® Double Cash Card might provide greater value.
Read the Fine Print
Pay close attention to the language in your credit card’s rewards program. Some dining credit cards do not earn bonus rewards for dining purchases made outside the United States, for instance. Others may offer accelerated points or cash back for restaurant purchases, not through delivery services like UberEATS, GrubHub, or others.
Rewards Flexibility
Rewards flexibility is another critical consideration when it comes to dining credit cards. Some cards have strict terms of redemption. General rewards cards, such as the Citi Custom Cash℠ Card, offer more versatility, which can be spent with significantly reduced restrictions or transferred to loyalty or frequent flyer programs.
