TD FlexPay Review

The TD FlexPay credit card is a balance transfer card with TD Bank’s best-ever balance transfer offer. New accounts enjoy a lengthy 0% intro APR period on transfers, the ability to skip one payment each year, and more – with no annual fee.

What Is FlexPay?

The FlexPay Visa Platinum Card’s most prominent feature is its “FlexPay” benefit – but what is FlexPay? Sometimes life happens, and finances are tight – and TD Bank – “America’s Most Convenient Bank,” is helping out with the ability to skip one monthly payment each year.

FlexPay allows cardholders to schedule which billing cycle in the future they want to skip the monthly payment without a penalty. TD Bank even provides a late fee forgiveness bonus. This feature takes the form of a one-time late payment fee refund every twelve billing cycles – a $40 value every year of card membership.

18 Months of 0% APR on Balance Transfers

The other big selling point with the TD FlexPay is the lengthy 0% introductory APR on balance transfers –an impressive 18 months with no interest on balances you carry over to the new TD Bank credit card. That intro APR offer is comparable with many balance transfer cards from major and regional banks and on par with rewards cards like the Citi® Double Cash Card, which also earns 2% back on purchases.

Unfortunately, that intro APR offer does not apply to purchases, something other leading cards provide. The Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card provides 0% APR for 21 months on transfers and 12 months on purchases. Similarly, the Wells Fargo Reflect Card provides 0% for 18 months on both purchases and transfers (and an extension of up to three months, based on meeting minimum requirements.

Available to Canadians Resident in the US

American credit cards for Canadian citizens are a very niche sector of the credit card industry. Still, it is a niche sector where TD Bank excels. For example, Canadian residents in the United States can apply for the Double Up Visa and have their TransUnion Canada credit score used for consideration. This feature is excellent for Canadians who travel for business, have family in the US, or are retirees (snowbirds) that want a US credit card while south of the Canadian border.

Other Card Features

TD FlexPay cardholders also enjoy cell phone protection when using their card to pay their mobile phone bill. Mobile phone protection is just one of the many protections and benefits that come from the Visa network, including the following:

Zero Fraud Liability Cardholder Inquiry Services Emergency Card Replacement
Roadside Dispatch and Auto Collision Damage Waiver Lost/Stolen Card Reporting ID Navigator from Norton

TD Bank Ratings

How does TD Bank rate as a lender? Here is a selection of expert reviews for the bank and its credit card products:

Should You Apply for the TD FlexPay Credit Card?

The TD FlexPay credit card is an enticing balance transfer card with a nice party trick. That party trick, the FlexPay feature, lets you skip one payment each year – and provides a $40 rebate for late fees for another payment. While the former benefit is exceptional, the latter is a consolation prize only. When the late fee is assessed, the damage is already done to your credit report, with missed payments one of the biggest hits your score can take.

Fortunately, the skip-a-payment feature is a blessing – as is the 18 months of 05 intro APR on purchases. Again, that APR bonus offer is comparable – but not better – with many similar offers and worse than the best intro APR cards from US Bank, Citi, Wells Fargo, and others. Ultimately, the FlexPay card is a great option for TD Bank customers or Canadians who relocate to the US during winter. For everyone else there are better offers available.
