In-Depth Review: LATAM Airlines Mastercard

The LATAM Airlines Mastercard from Cardless is a no annual fee airline card that lets travelers to and from South American travelers save big on their next flight. The credit card offers up to 3X miles on purchases, a decent welcome offer, and Cardless’ digital-first account experience.

Welcome Miles Bonus

New accounts with the LATAM Airlines Mastercard can earn 15,000 bonus LATAM Pass miles after spending $1,000 in the first three months. That spending bonus is enough for a basic redemption flight with the carrier – an excellent sign-up bonus for a modest $333/month introductory spend.

How to Earn Miles

The no annual fee version of the LATAM Mastercard earns up to 3X miles on select purchases. Cardholders earn those 3X miles on LATAM Airlines purchases. This bonus category is generous but has a caveat – miles cannot be earned on in-flight or onboard purchases with LATAM. This loophole is because these services are operated by a third-party vendor, meaning cardholders will earn only 1X miles.

The LATAM Mastercard also earns 2X miles on dining and select travel categories. Cardholders earn two miles per $1 spent on restaurant purchases, plus 2X on ground transportation services, including taxis, trains, and subways. All other purchases with the card earn a single mile (1X) per dollar spent.

Earn LATAM Qualifying Points

Both LATAM credit cards offer the chance to supercharge LATAM Pass Elite status earning. Cardholders with the basic, no annual fee version of the card acquire QP at a rate of 10% of miles earned on qualifying purchases. LATAM caps this rate to 7,000 QP per calendar year.

Qualifying points apply towards elite tier status in the LATAM Pass frequent flyer program, part of the SkyTeam Alliance. Here is what you can expect from each tier in the LATAM Pass program:

How to Redeem Miles

The LATAM Pass rewards program is one of the richest programs in the Americas- and also one of the most popular. Points apply to travel with LATAM, LATAM subsidiaries, and LATAM codeshare partners, including their new partnership with Delta – the world’s largest carrier. Points also apply towards seat upgrades, additional baggage allowances, and other associated travel costs with LATAM and LATAM partners.

Beyond flights, points can also be used towards hotel stays with partners, including Marriott BonvoyHilton HonorsIHGHyatt, and more. Points also apply to rental car hires with select partners and merchandise through LATAM retail partners.

Do LATAM Pass Miles Expire?

Yes, LATAM miles expire, unlike miles from other carriers. LATAM Pass miles expire 36 months after they are earned. This means cardholders will have three years to accumulate and spend miles without fear of them disappearing.

Ideally, miles would not expire. Fortunately, the 36-month period offers adequate time to accumulate enough rewards for a lucrative free flight or stay.

Should You Apply for the LATAM Airlines Mastercard?

LATAM is South America’s largest carrier, and its relationship with Delta Airlines ensures that LATAM Cardholders will have significant value on their LATAM Pass rewards points. Delta is the world’s largest airline, combined with LATAM’s strengths in Latin America, making the combo something of a dream come true for frequent travelers.

While better airline cards may be available at higher price points, the addition of no annual fee for the first year makes the LATAM Mastercard an especially decent option – especially for those who frequently travel to South or Central America.
