JetBlue Plus Card Review

The JetBlue Plus Card from Barclays is a premium airline rewards credit card from Barclays. The card is very similar to the no annual fee JetBlue Card but offers even greater points on JetBlue purchases, additional redemption options, redemption bonuses, and perks on JetBlue flights – more than recouping its $99 annual fee.

Introductory Offers

Like the no annual fee JetBlue Card, the JetBlue Plus Mastercard comes with two introductory offers. First, new accounts enjoy enjoying a 0% introductory APR period for the first 12 months on each balance transfer that posts to their account within 45 days of account opening. That lengthy introductory period is a great feature if you have excellent credit and want to transfer the balance of a higher APR credit card like a store card.

Second, new accounts earn 60,000 Bonus Points after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 90 days of account opening. This welcome offer has a cash value of around $600 when applied toward a JetBlue flight and is a whopping 6X bigger than the welcome offer with the JetBlue Card – for the same modest spend.

How to Earn Points

As mentioned, the JetBlue Plus Card has the same rewards structure as the basic JetBlue Card – with higher-end reward points on JetBlue purchases. Cardholders earn 6X points per $1 spent on eligible JetBlue transactions – double the 3X the no annual fee card provides.

Here is what JetBlue and Barclays define as eligible (or ineligible) purchases:

Which JetBlue transactions earn 3X TrueBlue points?
JetBlue.com JetBlue reservations JetBlue Vacations JetBlue airport ticket counters
The following transactions do not qualify for 3X points?
Car rentals and hotel reservations outside of JetBlue Vacation packages Purchases of TrueBlue points

You will also earn 2X points at restaurants and eligible grocery stores,  with merchants like Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club not qualifying as eligible grocers. All other purchases with the card earn a single point per dollar spent. rueBlue points never expire, and there is no cap on the number of points you can earn per category.

How to Redeem Rewards

The easiest way to redeem TrueBlue points is by booking flights with JetBlue Airlines. There are no blackout dates on JetBlue-operated flights, meaning any seat, any time. You’ll also be in good shape should you need to book an international fare. This benefit is thanks to JetBlue’s international codeshare partners:

American Airlines Hawaiian Airlines Icelandair Silver Airways
JSX Qatar Airways Singapore Airlines South African Airways
Aer Lingus Cape Air Porter

You can redeem TrueBlue points for gift cards or pool them with friends or family to save up for the ultimate award flight. Plus Credit Cardholders also have another redemption option not available to JetBlue cardholders. Points Payback allows you to redeem points for a statement credit, up to $1,000 annually.

Cash + Points

TrueBlue cardholders also have the option to use a mixture of TrueBlue points and cash to pay for flights, vacations, or other eligible bookings through JetBlue.com. You can use “Cash + Points” to pay for any JetBlue flight (excluding Blue Basic fares). You will still earn TrueBlue points on the cash portion of your fare or booking.

Get 10% of your points back when you redeem for and travel on a JetBlue-operated Award Flight – meaning you never have to worry about a zero balance. You’ll also enjoy 50% savings on eligible inflight purchases on JetBlue-operated flights.

Next is an airline perk for people who like saving money and hate waiting. The Plus-version of the card features a first-checked bag on JetBlue flights. This benefit extends to the cardholder and up to three travel companions on JetBlue-operated flights. Cardholders who renew their card earn a 5,000 points bonus each year after their JetBlue Plus Card account anniversary. Should You Apply for the JetBlue Plus Card?

Overall, the perks of the JetBlue Plus Card paired with the flexible TrueBlue rewards program make this card one of the best airline cards out there and well worth the $99 annual fee. Although this card does not offer priority boarding or lounge access, it makes up for those perks with a free checked bag (for you and 3 guests), anniversary bonus points, and the generous return on reward categories. Whether your travels find you flying every few days or every few years, the JetBlue Plus airline card is a serious contender for the next slot in your wallet. It brings very strong offerings to the table beyond its flight-related purchasing power.
