Target RedCard Mastercard Review

The Target RedCard™ is a popular store credit card from Target and issued by TD Bank. The card offers both open and closed-loop versions, meaning the non-branded version (without a Mastercard logo) can only be used for purchases with Target and not anywhere Mastercard is accepted, like a traditional credit card. Fortunately, the Target RedCard™ Mastercard version can be used worldwide and offers additional savings on everyday purchases. The credit cards are only one version of the RedCard™ program, with a debit card and reloadable prepaid cards being the other options.

Get 5% Off at Target

The biggest highlight of the RedCard™ store card is the ability to save 5% on eligible Target and Target.com purchases. That special saving is a great feature for anyone who frequently shops at Target. Even better, the 5% discount applies to other Target services. Cardholders can enjoy savings at any in-store Starbucks location, plus drive-up purchases, select specialty gift cards from brands like Disney, and Shipt orders placed at Target locations.

Unfortunately, not all purchases and transactions qualify for that discount. The following are ineligible for 5% off with the Target RedCard™:

Prescriptions Items behind pharmacy counter Clinic services Target Optical
Target GiftCards Prepaid cards Previous purchases Target credit payments or reloads
Shipt fees Alcohol (Indiana only) Gift wrapping Wireless protection and deposits

Mastercard Option Provides Extra Savings

The open-loop Target RedCard™ Mastercard differs in the bonus categories it offers on everyday spending anywhere in the world where Mastercard is accepted – currently in over 212 countries.

Cardholders earn 2% and 1% back on eligible global purchases, with the rewards breaking down as follows:

  • 2% back on gas or dining purchases
  • 1% back on all other purchases

If you were hoping for equally enticing credit card award options, unfortunately there is some disappointment to expect. The Target RedCard™ only offers a single redemption option for that cash back: gift cards. Rewards only apply to the purchase of Target GiftCards, making the open-loop card something of a letdown.

Other Credit Card Options for Target Savings

Two-Day Free Shipping

One of the other great features of the RedCard is the ability to save on shipping with select Target purchases. Cardholders enjoy free 2-day shipping on thousands of items at Target.com.

You can check a product’s eligibility by checking its listing on the Target site. If an item is eligible for 2-day shipping, it’ll be noted on the product detail page and on the cart & checkout page. Place your order by the order cutoff time to receive 2-day shipping on select items to select zip codes.

Other Features

Plenty of other Target-centric features are certain to add value to this no annual fee retail card. Principal among these additional benefits is an extended window for returns. RedCard holders receive 30 additional days to return purchases beyond the standard return policy applicable to each of the purchased items when bought at Target stores or Target.com.

As with all benefits in any loyalty program, Target reserves the right to discontinue or alter the terms of this program at any time. Additionally, RedCard extended returns do not apply to all purchases, with the following excluded:

  • Target Optical purchases
  • Non-returnable items
  • Contract mobile phones
  • Online SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) eligible items using both a RedCard and an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) as payment.

Cardholders also receive exclusive offers, discounts, and promotions tailored to their interests and shopping habits. Keep in mind that you’ll need to be enrolled in Target Circle™ to redeem offers, and available deals are subject to change and there may be seasonal differences.

Finally, the card includes Mastercard features and protections, including the following:

Zero Liability Protection Mastercard Global Services ID Theft Protection

TD Bank Ratings

How does TD Bank rate as a lender? Here is a selection of expert reviews for the bank and its credit card products:

Should You Apply for the Target RedCard?

The Target RedCard Mastercard is an interesting option because you can use it outside of Target locations. Despite that, the card likely isn’t for everyone. If you want a versatile credit card to earn rewards towards things other than Target gift cards, this probably isn’t your best bet, with almost any other no-annual-fee reward credit card being preferable. But if you live and breathe Target, then this is most likely, definitely, the card for you.

Ultimately, the Target RedCard is a decent store card if you just want that – a store card for taking care of purchases at that single retailer. For everyone else, there are far better options out there – including retail card options from U.S. Bank, Bread, Synchrony, or other issuers.
