BJ’s One™ Mastercard® Review

The BJ’s One™ Mastercard® is a cash rewards credit card from Capital One and bulk discount retail club, BJ’s Wholesale Club. The card earns up to 3% back in rewards on most BJ’s purchases, 1.5% back on everything else, and special savings at the pump at select locations.

Welcome Offer Bonus

New accounts with the BJ’s credit card from Capital One enjoy $40 in free rewards when they apply and are approved for a new BJ’s One™ Mastercard®. Getting $40 in BJ’s rewards is a great perk, especially as there is no spending requirement. Rewards will be added to your membership account approximately ten business days after opening your account.

How to Earn (and Redeem) Rewards with BJ’s One

The BJ’s One Mastercard is Capital One and BJ’s “entry-level” co-branded credit card. Because of this, it earns lesser rewards than its more premium sibling, the BJ’s One+™ Mastercard®, but not by much. As a cardholder, you can expect to earn 3% back in rewards on most purchases at the wholesale club and 1.5% back on all other purchases.

Rewards never expire. Your BJ’s One™ Mastercard rewards are yours for the life of the account. Please note that you must have a minimum balance of $10 in rewards to redeem, and your purchase must be at least $10 to qualify for points redemptions. You can redeem rewards when shopping with BJ’s –at BJ’s checkout in-store or online.

Wondering which BJ’s transactions don’t make the cut for those 3% back in rewards? Here’s the list:

Shipping Sales tax Bottle deposits Alcoholic beverages
Cigarettes and smoking products Lottery tickets Gift cards BJ’s gas
Online optical purchases Membership fees Warranties or protection plans BJ’s B2B and Global Sales transactions

Gas Card Comparison

That gas purchases don’t earn rewards is frustrating – especially as BJ’s operates its own proprietary gas station brand. The Costco Anywhere Visa®, for example, earns 4% cash back on eligible gas and EV charging purchases for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% after that. Similarly, the Sam’s Club® Mastercard® earns 5% cash back on gas anywhere Mastercard is accepted on the first $6,000 per year, then 1% after that.

That’s not to say that the BJ’S Mastercard doesn’t offer savings at the pump. As a cardholder, you can expect 10¢ off BJ’s Gas® every day, with no cap on how many gallons you can pump. Simply pay for your fuel purchase and scan your associated BJ’s membership card – that’s it.

Here’s how the BJ’s One™ Mastercard® stacks up with other warehouse club credit cards that offer savings at the pump:

Capital One Ratings

How is Capital One a credit card issuer? Here is a selection of reviews for the bank from consumers and experts alike:

Should You Apply for the BJ’s One™ Mastercard® from Capital One?

The BJ’s One Mastercard from Capital One is the replacement for the old the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® from Comenity. At this task, it performs admirably – but falls down when compared with other similar cards. The gas rewards category (or lack thereof) if most disappointing, although the 10 cents in savings for each gallon is a great benefit – but only if you plan to pump your gas at a local BJ’s location. Overall, the card performs well but lacks the oomph required to unseat its more noteworthy (and enticing) offers- namely those from Sam’s, Costco, or even Amazon.
