In-Depth Review:  Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card

If you regularly spend a lot on gasoline and groceries, the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card is a reliable rewards card to consider despite its $95 annual fee.

Who Can Benefit from the EveryDay Preferred Card?

The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card offers a range of benefits and features that make it an attractive option for many consumers. Whether you’re looking to earn rewards, redeem them for travel or other expenses, or want a card with low fees and competitive APRs, this card has you covered.

Eligibility

American Express credit cards are geared toward applicants with a strong credit history. Applicants need a good or excellent credit score to apply for the card.

Pre-Qualify

The EveryDay Preferred is one American Express credit card that lets you pre-qualify before applying. Amex requires basic account information, such as the last four digits of your Social Security Number, to see if you are suited for the card with no danger of a credit ding unless you decide to apply.

How to Earn Rewards

Welcome Offer

The EveryDay Preferred Card comes with a welcome offer slightly elevated from what you can expect with the EveryDay Credit Card. New EveryDay Preferred Card accounts earn a bonus of 15,000 Membership Rewards® points after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first three months of the account opening. That bonus offer is 5,000 points more than the no annual fee EveryDay Card.

Earn Up to 3X

Amex EveryDay® Preferred cardmembers earn the following rewards points on eligible card purchases:

  • Earn 3X points at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases
  • 2X points at U.S. gas stations
  • 1X points on all other purchases

Earn 50% More Rewards

Making 30 or more purchases with your Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card in a billing period earns you 50% extra points on those purchases (minus returns and credits).

How to Redeem Rewards

The Amex EveryDay® Preferred card’s impressive points collection allows members to use their accumulated rewards diversely. Cardholders can transfer points to frequent traveler programs, such as Delta SkyMiles®, pay for their travel when they book their trip at American Express Travel, use points for rewards from over 500 leading brands in gift cards, entertainment, merchandise, or more, or even use their points towards eligible card purchases.

What We Like About the Card

50% More Value

By making 30 transactions or more in a billing cycle, cardholders can earn 50% extra points on those purchases, allowing for increased point accumulation on everyday spending.

Membership Rewards

The card earns rewards in the American Express Membership Rewards program. The Membership Rewards earned with the card can be redeemed for travel, merchandise, gift cards, statement credits, or transferred to airline or hotel partners, providing flexibility in how you can use your rewards.

Things to Consider

Annual Fee

The $95 annual fee with the Amex EveryDay Preferred Card is steep. The card offers little additional value versus the no annual fee Amex EveryDay credit card, beyond a slightly higher earning rate and the chance to earn 50% more points after using the card for 30+ purchases each month. Unless you are a credit card rewards master, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

American Express Ratings

How does American Express rate as a bank and issuer? Here is a selection of ratings for the bank from consumers and experts:

Should You Apply for the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card?

If you’re on the fence about the Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card, it’s a good idea to weigh the benefits this card affords you against the annual fee and interest rates to decide if it fits your financial needs.

American Express also offers the Amex EveryDay Credit Card, which is essentially a simpler version of this card without an annual fee, meaning you may find better value in a card that doesn’t have a yearly subscription fee of nearly $100. If you know you will use the EveryDay Preferred card frequently at supermarkets and gas stations, it may be worth spending some extra cash to get the additional rewards-earning power. Also consider the Citi Premier® Card for an everyday credit card with a modest annual fee.
