Amazon Store Credit Card Review

The Amazon Store Credit Card is a closed-loop retail card from Synchrony and global shopping giant Amazon.com. The card provides many of the features of the Chase Amazon and Prime Visa credit cards, just exclusively for Amazon and other eligible Amazon brand purchases.

Welcome Bonus

Like the Chase Amazon credit cards, the Amazon Store Card comes with an Amazon gift card upon approval of the card.

Lower Credit and Usability Thresholds Versus the Chase Prime Visa

Store cards typically offer lower credit requirements than open-loop credit cards, and this is because the usability of the cards is reduced. The Amazon Visa and Prime Visa are open-looped, meaning cardholders can use their cards anywhere in the world Visa is accepted.

In contrast, the Amazon Store Card only works on Amazon and eligible Amazon subsidiary purchases. The card (and the secured card version, the Amazon Secured Store Credit Card) can only be used at Amazon.com, Audible, Amazon Bookstore, Amazon Web Services comixology.com). Whole Foods, however, does not qualify – a major letdown.  Cardholders can use it anywhere Amazon Pay is accepted, providing some open-loop adjacent access.

Rewards or Promo Financing

Cardholders earn cash back rewards on purchases made with Amazon and Amazon-owned businesses. The rate, however, depends on your Amazon Prime membership status. With Prime, Store Credit Cardholders earn 5% back on all Amazon purchases. Without Prime, cardholders earn nadda, zilch, nothing.

Cardholders planning a larger purchase can opt for promotional financing instead of rewards. That means cardholders enjoy the following options for either. “Pay In Equal Amounts” or 0% APR:

Months Purchase minimums
6 $50 and $599.99
12 $600+
24 Eligible items noted at checkout

How to Redeem Cash Back

Cash back rewards are added to your Amazon account as rewards points, with 1% cash back equal to 1X points. Once the points are added to your account, you can apply them to eligible purchases on Amazon by selecting to use rewards points at checkout, or alternatively, rewards may be redeemed as a statement credit.

Synchrony Ratings

Should You Apply for the Amazon Store Card?

Store cards in general, are a mixed bag, with limited usefulness and even more limited award options. But that’s not the case with the Amazon Store Credit Card. The card features the same reduced usability as any closed-loop store card, but it works with Amazon and Amazon Pay – two massively large options that provide far more value than a basic clothing loyalty program. The rewards with the card are decent, but nothing to compare with the Chase credit cards. They feature lower credit needed qualifications, special promotional financing, and no annual fee.
