Bread Cashback™ American Express® Credit Card Review

The unlimited cash back crowd is a hotly competitive space. Now Bread (formerly Comenity) is looking to make versatile cash back rewards a breeze with its Bread Cashback™ American Express® Credit Card.

How to Earn Cash Back

The Bread Cashback Amex earns unlimited 2% cash back rewards on all eligible purchases. That earning rate applies to all eligible transactions, meaning things like these won’t earn you any rewards:

Balance transfers Card account checks Unauthorized or fraudulent transactions
Cash advances Returns for credit Traveler’s cheques or foreign currency purchases
Lottery tickets Money orders or wire transfers Reloading of a prepaid debit or gift cards
Card fees, late fees, or finance charges

Fortunately, with Bread, there is no limit to the total amount of cash back you can earn. There are also no confusing bonus categories, opt-ins, or any other confusing language. While those categories won’t earn cash back, they are the most with all other issues.

How to Redeem Rewards

Redeeming rewards with Bread is also simple and straightforward. Cardholders can redeem their cash back rewards for either statement credits (towards the minimum payment due, or to lower your total balance) or as a direct deposit into an associated bank account.

The redemption options leave a little to be desired – but only for those who prefer a greater variety of award options. The Citi® Double Cash Card and Wells Fargo Active Cash Card, for example, both allow cardholders to use rewards for travel, gift cards, and merchandise – something Bread does not allow.

How Does the Bread Cashback American Express Stack Up?

The 2% cash back with Bread’s new Cashback American Express Card is on par with several leading credit cards from leading issuers (namely the previously-mentioned Citi® Double Cash and the Wells Fargo Active Cash cards). Both cards also feature no cap on rewards and no annual fee.

Here’s how the three unlimited cash back credit cards mentioned compare:

Bread Cashback Amex Citi® Double Cash Card Wells Fargo Active Cash Card
Annual fee $0 $0 $0
Rewards Unlimited 2% cash back on all eligible purchases Unlimited 2% back on all purchases (1% back when you purchase and 1% back when you pay) Unlimited 2% back on all purchases
Intro APR N/A 0% for 18 months on balance transfers 0% for 15 months on balance transfers and purchases

Other Card Features

The Bread Cashback American Express Credit Card features include Amex protections and benefits. These protections include purchase protection for stolen or damaged items and ID theft insurance. Other protections include reimbursement for repair or replacement of car rentals made with the card and 24/7 emergency assistance.

Cardholders also enjoy access to a slew of Amex benefits, including:

  • Amex Entertainment Access: Get early access to purchase tickets for concerts, theater, sports, and more, all year round.
  • #AMEXFORFOODIES: Enjoy up to 20% off your bill or a free appetizer for dine-in or takeout at participating restaurants with Resy.

One great feature of the Bread Cashback American Express is access to Amex Offers. Amex Offers is similar to programs from other banks (think Citi Merchant Offers) and provides a selection of special savings for American Express cardholders. Many of these offers provide significant value for money, including deep discounts.

Other card features include:

Finally, the Bread Cashback Card provides American Express benefits and protections. While not as expansive as the Visa or Mastercard payment networks, Amex provides comprehensive protections to cardmembers, including the following:

Extended Warranty Return Protection Car Rental Loss & Damage Insurance Amex Concierge
Purchase Protection Zero Fraud Liability Trip Delay Insurance Amex Offers

Comenity (Bread) Ratings

How do Breads Financial and Comenity stack-up as a bank and credit card issuer? Here is a selection of expert and consumer ratings for the bank:

Should You Apply for the Bread Cashback™ American Express® Credit Card?

Unlimited cash back has its allure but is the Bread Cashback American Express worth considering? The answer may be yes for those who want uncomplicated cash back and have average credit.

The card’s unlimited cash back is solid – 2% cash back on all eligible purchases. That rewards rate is on par with several other leading cash back rewards cards, including the Citi Double Cash, the TD Double Up, and the Wells Fargo Active Cash.

However, the shortcoming with Bread Amex is the redemption options with those unlimited rewards. Bread only offers two redemptions options: statement credits or direct deposits. The other cards mentioned provide much more versatile rewards –especially the Citi card, which offers 1:1 transfers with over 17 airlines and hotels.

Ultimately, the Bread Cashback™ American Express® provides plenty of upside while avoiding many of the downsides of rewards cards for average credit scores.
