SkyBlue SKYPASS Visa Card Review

The SkyBlue SKYPASS Visa is a basic airline rewards card for those who prefer to travel on Korean Air but don’t want the more prestigious SKYPASS Visa Signature Card. The card earns a flat-rate single SKYPASS mile for every $2 spent on purchases, with no cap on the total number of points available to earn. New cardholders also earn 5,000 bonus miles when they use their SkyBlue Card to make their first purchase.

SKYPASS miles are applicable towards reward flights with Korean Air, as well as with any other SkyTeam airlines. The SkyTeam Alliance, featuring names like Delta, Air France, KLM, and more, reaches over 1,000 destinations worldwide. Miles also apply towards seat upgrades, additional baggage allowances, lounge access, rental cars, and stays with SkyTeam hotel partners.

While every other Korean Air SKYPASS credit card features an annual fee, the SkyBlue SKYPASS card features no annual fee – always a nice perk. Because the card has no annual fee, however, don’t expect many airport-centric perks. There are no complimentary lounge passes, for example, or priority boarding.

The SkyBlue Card comes with the usual benefits of a Visa credit card, including $250,000 in travel insurance, Auto Rental Collison Damage Waiver, fraud and Zero Liability protection, and access to Visa’s 24/7 bilingual account services. Cardholders also get complimentary access to their VantageScore credit score each month.

Should You Apply for the SkyBlue SKYPASS Visa?

If you are like to travel now and then and are looking for a straightforward way to earn miles without paying an annual fee, the SkyBlue SKYPASS Visa Card is a decent option to consider. While the initial bonus of 5,000 miles after the first purchase and the meager ½ mile per dollar spent might not turn heads, no annual fee, no cap on miles earned, and solid redemption options make the card a respectable choice.

The card does offer some additional benefits, including $250,000 in travel insurance – which is certainly a plus. The addition of the Visa suite of cardmember protections and customer service support is another reason why you should consider this card.

Ultimately, however, the presence of foreign transaction fees, lower-than-average miles per dollar, and lack of airport perks may mean that potential applicants are better off choosing a general travel rewards card, such as the BB&T Vantage, Discover It Miles, or Spark Miles Select from Capital One – all of which feature no annual fee.
