If Delta is your airline of choice when planning trips for work or leisure, then you’ll enjoy the number of complimentary upgrades, discounts, and other preferential treatment available to you through the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express. New cardholders will earn 35,000 bonus miles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles after making $1,000 in purchases in your first 3 months.
Those who want an airline rewards card to enhance their airport experience will find it with the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card. This Delta Amex travel card is chock full of flyer-perks such as priority boarding, preferred seating, first checked bags are free, 20% savings on in-flight purchases, as well as an exclusive per-visit rate for Delta Sky Club access. The card has an above-average annual fee of $195 that is not waived the first year, so those who apply for the card should plan on booking flights to get their money’s worth of perks immediately. Unfortunately, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® card does not have a competitive rewards rate for Delta flights and cardholders will have to rely on the signup bonus and a hefty minimum spending bonus for the bulk of their miles.
New Platinum Delta SkyMiles® cardholders can earn 35,000 bonus miles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles after making $1,000 in purchases in your first 3 months. Thanks to the annual Miles Boost® feature, there’s the potential to earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs after making $25,000 in purchases within a calendar year and – on top of that – another 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs after making $50,000 in purchases in a calendar year. However, those spending such large amounts could easily find better returns with a different hotel or travel rewards card.
In terms of earning miles for everyday purchases, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® falls short, leaving cardholders with only a few unimpressive options. All non-Delta related only earn 1 mile per dollar for any purchases made on the card – meaning everyday purchases for gas, dining out, restaurants, entertainment, should be paid for with a different credit card. Purchases made directly to Delta only earn 2X the points per dollar spent, which will make it difficult for a casual Delta flyer to make this card worth their while. There is no cap on the number of miles a person can earn and miles are redeemable with Delta’s 30+ additional airline partners, but unfortunately won’t serve much use once the points from signup bonuses and mile boost bonuses have been spent.
Beyond the ability to quickly rack up SkyMiles, Platinum Delta SkyMiles® cardholders can also take advantage of an impressive array of members-only benefits. These benefits include a complimentary domestic main cabin round-trip certificate, so the holder doesn’t have to travel alone. This reward is available upon renewal of the card each year. Members also get their first checked bag free when flying with Delta, main cabin priority boarding on all flights with either Delta or one of its 30 partner airlines, discounted access to the Delta Sky Club for the cardholder and up to two guests, 20% in in-flight savings in the form of a statement credit, and baggage insurance protection – providing coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged checked items.
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® card features a $195 annual fee and an APR on par with other similar airline rewards cards, but the low earning rate makes this card hard to justify owning, even for the frequent Delta flyer. The majority of the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® card’s value comes from its perks directly related to the airport experience. Although the Mile Boost could earn up to 20,000 bonus miles per year, it requires an extremely high minimum spend that would definitely earn more with other credit cards. For those who travel extremely frequently with Delta airlines, this card might be worth holding on to as a supplementary card for Delta-related purchases but doesn’t offer enough to serve as one’s primary credit card.
Apply for This Card if You:
- Will spend $1,000 within the first 3 months of card ownership
- Will spend a minimum of $25,000 on the card per year to earn the Miles Boost bonus miles
- Enjoy convenient travel benefits like priority boarding and in-flight discounts on food and drink
