At Home Mastercard® Review

The At Home Mastercard® can be a great credit card to have in your wallet if you shop at this home décor store. This retailer has most of its stores in the eastern half of the United States, but shoppers can also purchase items online. This credit card earns cardholders five points for every dollar spent at At Home, three points per dollar on groceries, and one point for all other purchases. Cardholders also benefit from other perks. Keep reading to learn more.

Earn Up to 5X Points on Purchases

The At Home Mastercard lets cardholders earn points on pretty much all their purchases. However, this rewards program does implement a tiered points system.

At Home purchases qualify you for five points for every dollar you spend. Whenever you check out at the grocery store, you’ll be earning three points for every dollar. All other purchases will earn you one point for each dollar.

Many retail cards from Synchrony Bank (the issuer of the At Home card) offer 5x points when you use your card at a particular retailer. Typically, all other purchases only earn cardholders one point for every dollar they spend. Being able to earn more than the one-to-one ratio on purchases outside of the co-branded retailer (At Home, in this case) is not too common in these types of cards. it definitely gives you much more opportunities to rack up points more quickly than with many other retail cards.

How Much Are Points Worth?

Cardholders are eligible for a $5 reward certificate for every 500 points they earn. If you use your At Home Mastercard just for making purchases at At Home, then you essentially earn $5 for every $100 that you spend. Being that home design stores typically sell big-ticket items, you would expect it to be easy to rack up a lot of points from purchasing a single piece of merchandise. However, At Home’s price points are pretty low compared to many other home furnishings retailers.

A sofa from At Home ranges in price from around $300 to just over $500, which can earn you about $15 to $20 in rewards credits. Compare that to sofas from Macy’s, which retail for around $1,000…and Macy’s isn’t even a high-end furniture retailer.

At Home also doesn’t offer many options for large furnishings, like dining tables and beds. The majority of this retailer’s inventory is is comprised of small, inexpensive home accents, like picture frames and throw pillows.

The positive in this is that even a $10 rewards credit can cover the cost of an average item, like a tabletop picture frame. But the big problem here is actually finding an opportunity to spend enough money at At Home to earn those rewards credits. You’d have to buy a lot of tchotchkes to be able to earn a free tchotchke.

That’s why 3x points on groceries with this card is such a draw. You only need to spend around $166 on groceries to qualify you for a $5 reward credit. That’s usually around the cost of a weekly food shopping trip for an average family. Within a month, you can rack up around $20 worth of At Home credits. And that doesn’t even include any points you might have earned from other purchases.

Redeeming Your Points

One of the pain points with the At Home Mastercard is that you don’t really have any flexibility when it comes to using the points you earned. You can’t redeem your rewards points anytime you want. Instead, Synchrony Bank will automatically issue you rewards certificates in $5, $10, $15, and $20 denominations as soon as you’ve earned enough points.

Another frustrating detail is that cardholders can only receive a maximum of four rewards certificates per month. So, if you were thinking of using this credit card aggressively to rake in a torrent of rewards certificates ASAP, you’ll be disappointed.

The other drawback with this credit card is that your rewards certificates expire 90 days after they’re issued. If you couple that with the fact that you are automatically issued these certificates, it can feel as if you are being forced to use your rewards to purchase something you may not even want. If you are very particular about how you furnish your home and wait to find the perfect piece that really speaks to you, this feature is a deal breaker. Forget waiting around for that perfect side table to appear.

0% Interest for 6 Months with the At Home Mastercard®

The At Home Mastercard features a promotional 0% APR for purchases of $299 or higher. This is actually a deferred interest for a 6-month period. So, if you decide to purchase that $350 sofa from At Home, you can pay it off in six months without having to pay interest on it. Any balance that remains from that purchase after the six months are up accrues the regular purchase APR, which is a little on the higher end of things. If you want to use this card’s deferred interested feature, you should really try to pay off those purchases within six months to avoid having to pay that hefty interest on it.

What’s really good about this 0% interest promotion is that you can take advantage of it any time you want as long as your account is active and in good standing. Many other credit cards only offer promotional APRs when you first sign up for the card, and you have a limited time period to take advantage of that promotion.

Furthermore, you can take advantage of this deferred interest feature for pretty much any purchase anywhere. Other retail cards can limit deferred interest options to purchases you make only at their stores. That being said, you can go to Macy’s and get that $1,000 sofa with your Mastercard while earning enough rewards points to get you $10 off a throw pillow from At Home.

10% Discount on Your First Purchase

New cardholders get a special gift from the At Home Mastercard® for signing up. After getting approved, you automatically receive 10% off your first purchase at At Home using your new credit card.

You can only use this discount once. Additionally, there are certain restrictions for what you can and cannot buy. For instance, J.A. Henkels knives are exempt from this discount, which can be a letdown for those who love to cook.

Being that the majority of items this retailer sells are inexpensive, this discount doesn’t really add up to much savings. As such, this perk isn’t enough of an incentive to sign up for this card.

One way to really take advantage of this offer, however, is to identify a big-ticket item you would like to purchase before you apply for this credit card. For instance, there might be a $500 dining table you have your eyes on. If you apply for the At Home Mastercard, you will save $50 on that purchase in addition to earning around $20 in rewards credits.

Access to Insider Perks™

Insider Perks™ is At Home’s loyalty program, and you automatically get enrolled as soon as you’re approved for the At Home Mastercard®. You receive a special bonus gift on your birthday and can make returns without having to present a receipt. At Home likes to advertise this as one of the perks of its Mastercard. However, you can join the Insider Perks™ program for free and still receive all the benefits mentioned above. So, if you were considering signing up for this card for the Insider Perks™, know that this is a free program that takes minutes to join online.

Should You Apply for the At Home Mastercard®?

Perhaps the most obvious answer to this question is that this is an ideal card if you are a regular At Home shopper, since you can only use your rewards at this retailer’s stores and website. Five points for every dollar spent at At Home may seem like a lot, but it’s actually pretty standard for Synchrony rewards cards. Additionally, At Home’s merchandise is pretty inexpensive, and its stores may be few and far between, depending on where you live. All of this adds up to limited opportunities to earn lot’s of points.

But there is always a silver lining. Three points for every dollar spent on groceries is perhaps this card’s chief saving grace. You can earn about $20 worth of in-store credits from just one month’s worth of grocery bills. And while At Home’s low-cost merchandise is a negative when earning points, it’s actually a good thing when it comes to redeeming points. If you use your At Home Mastercard regularly, you can pretty much redeem your points for one free item every month.

If you are an interior designer or decorator, this might be a good option for you regardless of whether or not you are frequent At Home shopper. You can use this credit card anywhere, even on purchases made at other home furnishing stores.

You will earn less points per dollar, but it can still add up. If you spend $2,000 on a sofa sectional, you end up earning $20 in At Home credits. In the end, your At Home rewards can help you pick up some last-touch accessories at no additional cost to you. As a designer, you can actually charge your client for these items, thus increasing your profits.
