The FLW Visa® Rewards Card Review

The FLW Visa® Rewards Credit Card is a card from Commerce Bank that features the FLW logo. FLW is the acronym for Fishing League Worldwide, the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization.  The no annual fee rewards card offers a huge assortment of perks for fishing lovers.

That complimentary membership, now known as Major League Fishing Bass Fishing Membership, is valued at around $95 annually, meaning you’ll get a ton of great perks that mesh with your love of fishing:

How to Earn Rewards

The FLW Visa offers a similar reward structure to other Commerce Bank cash back rewards credit cards. This structure means you’ll earn up to 3% cash back on the following everyday type purchases:

Categories Explained
3% cash back on Streaming, Cable and Ridesharing When card is used for purchases in the streaming, cable or the ridesharing and taxis categories, including: Cable, Satellite & Other Pay TV/Radio;Record Shops; Digital Goods; and Amazon Services. The cable category does not include Google Fiber. Merchants self-select category, so not all merchants will earn additional bonus – notable exclusions include Amazon Streaming, Pandora and YouTube Music/TV.
2% cash back on Gas, Restaurants, Fast Food When card is used for purchases in the service station or automated fuel dispensers, restaurant, fast food restaurant, and drinking places categories.
1% cash back on All Other Purchases When card is used to make purchases in any other category. Merchants self-select category, so not all merchants will earn additional bonus.

Fishing and Outdoors Credit Card Comparison

There are several retail credit cards aimed at the avid outdoorsman and lovers of fishing. Here is how the FLW/MLF Visa Rewards compares with another option from Capital One:

FLW Visa® Rewards Card Bass Pro Shops® CLUB Card Cabela's CLUB® Card
Annual fee $0 $0 $0
Rewards 3X on streaming, cable, & rideshares; 2X on gas and dining; 1X on all else 2% back on Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s purchases; 1% on all else 2% back on Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s purchases; 1% on all else
Other Free FLW membership Special store financing Special store financing
Network Visa Mastercard Mastercard

Businesses self-identify the category of business they are, which can be a plus, if you know your merchant codes (MCCs). You don’t have to worry about Commerce Bank arbitrarily determining the nature of a business.

However, you can run into some roadblocks to earning the most points. For instance, buying a burger and fries at a gas station may not qualify you for 2X points, for instance, depending on how the service station classifies itself. Getting a cup of coffee at a bakery may not qualify you for 2X points on your purchase. That bakery may not be categorized as either a coffee shop or a restaurant.

Redeeming Your Points

The FLW Visa® Rewards Card gives you many options when it comes time to redeem your points:

Redeem Commerce Bank rewards for:
Airfare Hotel vouchers Car rentals Gift cards
Statement credits Fuel discounts Charity

You can redeem your points for cash back. However, remember that you can only receive your cash back as a statement credit and not a cash deposit. You can also redeem your travel points, fuel discounts, gift cards, and merchandise through the Commerce Bank catalog. However, a drawback to this rewards catalog is that the items have no prices. You can’t view how many points you need to obtain any item until you create an account.

Commerce Bank does, however, throw out some crumbs of information. For instance, cash back redemptions start at 2,500 points. Many rewards programs that offer cash back start their cash back amounts at $25. If this is the case with Commerce bank, each point has a value of $0.01 (one cent). That’s about the industry standard value for reward points.

Visa Benefits

The FLW Visa also features Visa Platinum protections and benefits, including:

Zero Fraud Liability Cardholder Inquiry Services Emergency Card Replacement
Roadside Dispatch and Auto Collision Damage Waiver Lost/Stolen Card Reporting ID Navigator from Norton

Commerce Bank Ratings

What’s it like to live with Commerce Bank as a credit card issuer and bank? Here is a selection of reviews for the Midwestern bank:

Should You Apply for the FLW Visa® Rewards Card?

The FLW Visa® Rewards Card is great if you are an avid sports angler and want to show your support for the FLW. However, the majority of the attractive perks of this card have to do with FLW membership. You should compare the FLW benefits that this card offers versus those you can get just from joining the organization. Besides the FLW perks, this card is almost identical to many other Commerce Bank credit cards. The rewards-earning categories don’t seem to make sense for people who would be drawn to FLW. Additionally, the introductory APR offers are paltry compared to what many competitors offer.
