Verizon Visa® Card Review

The Verizon Visa® Card is a cash back rewards card from Synchrony, leading cellular phone and internet provider Verizon. The card packs a lot of value for Verizon customers, who are the only ones eligible to apply for it.

Introductory Bonus Offer

New accounts with the Verizon Visa® Card can enjoy special savings when using their card to pay their Verizon Fios bill. Cardholders get up to a total of $100 in credit applied to their Verizon wireless bill over the first 24 months of opening a credit card account. This credit equates to $4.17 each month, which isn’t exceptional – but it beats having to pay that amount (so it’s something at least).

How to Earn Rewards

While the Verizon Visa is only available to Verizon customers (including Fios customers), the reward categories in which the card earns offer everyday value – although there are special rewards for qualifying purchases. Verizon purchases earn 2% back, including cell phone purchases, tablet purchases, and select services.

The top cash back category with the card, however, is more in tune with everyday spending. The Verizon Card earns 4% back on gas station and grocery store purchases, which is a great feature for those who want to earn rewards on their weekly recurring charges. Equally enjoyable is the 3% back the card earns on dining and restaurant purchases, including takeout, with all other purchases earning 1% back.

How to Redeem Rewards

While the Verizon Visa Card earns cash back rewards, they aren’t cash back in the typical sense. Instead, cash back takes the form of Verizon Dollars. Verizon Dollars are the currency of the Verizon Up Rewards Program, with points applying towards purchases with Verizon, including new phones, tablets, services, and billing.

Redeeming Verizon Dollars is only available through the Verizon app, called My Verizon (available through Google Play and Apple App Store), at the moment, though Verizon may change redemption options in the future.

Rewards Dollars do not expire, but the same can’t be said for all Verizon Up Rewards. Monthly Rewards refresh with a new selection at the start of every month. Before redeeming, be sure to check the Verizon Up rewards program terms and conditions to ensure you get the value you expect from your award option.

Other Card Features

The Verizon Card also provides a variety of other features for cardholders – both Verizon-specific and not. Chief among the Verizon perks are two free TravelPass day vouchers each year of card membership. TravelPass provides Verizon customers the ability to use domestic talk, text, and data in over 186 countries outside the U.S.

The card also benefits from no foreign transaction fees (in addition to no annual fee). This feature makes the Verizon Card a great companion on global travel – especially considering that Visa is the world’s leading payment network by total number of vendors that accept it.

Another cool feature of the Verizon Visa is the cool metal card design. The Verizon Card from Synchrony features a sleek black design and all-metal construction, giving the card weight and feel unlike most other no annual fee credit cards. In total, the Verizon Visa weighs in at around 17 grams, which is on par with much more exclusive cards, such as the American Express Gold Card.

Visa Benefits

Verizon Cardholders will also enjoy the visa benefits of either Visa Signature or Visa Platinum, depending on which card they qualify for. Visa Signature offers a greater array of perks and protections, however, including:

Zero Fraud Liability Cardholder Inquiry Services Emergency Card Replacement Luxury Hotel Collection Extended Warranty Coverage
Roadside Dispatch Lost/Stolen Card Reporting ID Navigator from Norton Travel & Emergency Assistance

Synchrony Ratings

How does Synchrony stack up as a credit card issuer? Here is a selection of ratings for the bank:

Should You Apply for the Verizon Visa® Card from Synchrony?

Is the Verizon Visa worth the hype? That depends on how many services you currently have with the company.

The card earns a very impressive 4% back on groceries and gas – plus 3% back on dining. However, the cash back rewards are converted into Verizon Up Dollars, which have almost zero value outside of Verizon device and service purchases. However, if you frequently use the rewards program, having and using the card will surely boost your earning and redeeming capabilities.

Because of the reduced award options, the card only makes sense for those who want to get the most Verizon bang for their buck. For those individuals, the Verizon Visa is an impressive card – and slick-looking, to boot.
