Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Visa Review

Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Visa® is issued by Comenity Bank and has few benefits to offer as a standalone credit card. Instead, the card’s primary strength is when it is paired with a Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club membership and offers an additional 2.5% discount on all merchandise on top of the existing program discounts. Sportsman’s Guide is an online and catalog retailer specializing in outdoor and sporting gear, including hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities.

Earn a $40 Certificate

New accounts with the card earn a $40 Reward Certificate good toward any Sportsman’s Guide purchase after opening and spending $500 outside Sportsman’s Guide with your Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club Visa® Credit Card where Visa is accepted within the first 90 days of account opening.

Earn impressive Rewards on Top of Your Membership

The biggest selling point of the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Visa® is the chance to earn even deeper discounts on the outdoor stuff you want and need. As a current Buyer’s Club member, you get an additional 2.5% discount on all merchandise you buy when using the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Visa® card. That means your typical 10% store discount jumps to 12.5%, at checkout and up to 7.5% on guns and ammo – but even having no annual fee might not be enough to justify applying for the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club credit card.

Store Card and Visa Card Offer Different Rewards

But the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards offers even more rewards for select applicants. Like other retail card programs, the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Visa is one option, with your application also valid for the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Credit Card should you not qualify.

The Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards is a closed-loop, meaning you can only use it for purchases at Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club. Because of this, the store card version is available to those with fair credit instead of the Visa version of the card. And because of this, you won’t earn rewards on external purchases. Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Visa cardholders enjoy bonus rewards outside of Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® – 1% back on every eligible purchase.

Fortunately, Comenity Bank offers a simple pre-qualification for many of its credit cards. This pre-qualifying process can see if you are a good fit for the credit card without damaging your credit score.

How to Redeem Rewards

The other features of the card are less impressive, however, offering an unremarkable signup bonus of $40 for spending $500 within the first 90 days and a downright dismal 1% back in reward points for all purchases made outside of the store.

It would require spending $100,000 outside of the Sportsman’s Guide to earn a mere $10 in rewards – even the most basic cash back credit card being exponentially more rewarding. We recommend spending just enough to qualify for the sign-up bonus and then keeping it solely for Sportsman’s Guide purchases.

Should you choose to use your card outside of the retailer and try to earn points, the rewards have several limitations that are worth noting. Reward points expire 24 months after they have been earned, and reward certificates expire 12 months after being earned. As with Comenity’s other co-branded credit cards, reward certificates are automatically generated once the minimum number of reward points has been accumulated.

Other Card Features

Other notable card features of the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Rewards Visa include instant credit line access upon approval, exclusive deals and member offers, and Visa purchase and security benefits such as:

Zero Fraud Liability Cardholder Inquiry Services Emergency Card Replacement
Roadside Dispatch and Auto Collision Damage Waiver Lost/Stolen Card Reporting ID Navigator from Norton

Comenity Bank Ratings

How does Comenity rate as a credit card issuer? Here is a selection of reviews and ratings for the bank and its parent, Bread Financial:

Should You Apply for the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Visa?

Overall, the Sportsman’s Guide Buyer’s Club® Rewards Visa® has little to offer the avid hunter, outdoorsmen, or gun enthusiast that their reward program (the Buyer’s Club) doesn’t already offer. With the rewards program providing the bulk of the customer perks, even the most loyal of Sportsman’s Guide shoppers won’t miss out on much by passing on this card.
