SLFCU Visa Platinum Rebate Card Review

The SLFCU Visa Platinum Value Card is Sandia Laboratory’s mid-range credit card, offering some of the perks of both the SLFCU Visa Signature and the SLFCU Visa Platinum Value Card.

Receive a Year-end Rebate on Purchases

Like the Visa Signature, the SLFCU Visa Platinum Rebate Card earns a special end-of-year rebate on purchases. The Platinum Rebate card earns a 0.75% rebate, which is essentially 0.75% cash back.

The cash back rebate with the Platinum Rebate Card is half of what cardholders would get with other cash back cards, such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited or the American Express Cash Magnet Card – at 1.5% cash back each.

Of course, the SLFCU Visa Platinum Rebate Card features a much lower APR than either of these cards, but for anyone who does not plan to carry a balance, this reduced interest rate is of little use. If, however, a low APR is important, then the Platinum Rebate does have some value, as its APR is around 2.5% to 3% lower than either the Cash Magnet or the Freedom Unlimited.

Credit Limits to Fit Every Budget

The SLFCU Visa Signature is Sandia Labs’ premium credit card, with premium credit limits to match. The Value Visa, on the other hand, aims to provide credit limits to suit every budget. The SLFCU Visa Platinum continues the trend of the Value Card, offering no minimum credit limit with the card, meaning the credit union won’t penalize applicants who don’t qualify for the Visa Signature’s $5,000+ spending limits – instead offering a limit to suit their particular needs and budget.

Visa Platinum Benefits

Visa Platinum benefits are not anything spectacular – in fact, they are common protections offered by other credit card lenders, including Discover, Mastercard, and American Express.

Visa Platinum perks and protections add an additional layer of security to credit card purchases and offer dedicated support should anything go wrong. These features include emergency card replacement and emergency cash disbursement in the event of a lost card, Visa’s Zero Liability fraud protection, and travel benefits, such as Roadside Dispatch and Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver.

Who Can Join the Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union?

Sandia Laboratory FCU is the second-largest credit union in the state of New Mexico in terms membership – with over 84,000 members across both New Mexico and California.

Membership is currently open to current and retired employees of any of the over 1,000 companies and associations that partner with Sandia Labs FCU. For a complete list of all the available partner companies, call the credit union’s toll-free number at 1-800-947-5328.

Membership is also open to members of the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History (New Mexico residents only), members of the Albuquerque International Association, or the immediate family members or householder members of any of the above-listed individuals.

Should You Apply for the SLFCU Visa Platinum Rebate Card?

The SLFCU Visa Platinum Rebate Card tries hard to be the best both of Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union’s other offerings: the SLFCU Visa Signature and the SLFCU Visa Platinum Value Cards. Unfortunately, while the card tries to walk the fine line between cash back rewards and a low APR. While the card does an admirable job at this, it simply does not offer enough of either to make it an enticing offer.

Though the APR for the Rebate Card is lower than many “low APR” credit cards available today, it is still over 2% higher than what Sandia Labs’ offers for the Value Card – which sites at around 10.5%. Additionally, the cash back “rebate” is significantly lower than the cash back offered by many cash back cards from larger lenders and even the SLFCU Visa Signature.

For those who already bank with SLFCU and want a basic cash back card and a decent APR, the SLFCU Visa Platinum Rebate Card is a satisfactory option to consider. If, however, you don’t bank with Sandia Laboratory FCU, this isn’t a card for which you should go out of your way.
