The Best Military Credit Cards of 2019

Veterans Day is once again upon us. This is the time of year where we humbly page homage to those who have proudly served in our nation’s Armed Forces – and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Honoring our servicemen and women is integral to American culture and society – after all, without our military personnel (and their families that stand behind them), we wouldn’t have many of the freedoms we commonly take for granted.

BestCards’ Top Picks for Best Military Credit Cards

At BestCards, we applaud our service members and their families and hope to provide them with the resources they need to make informed decisions about their next credit cards. We have compiled a list of a few of our favorite credit cards for military members.

USAA Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature

USAA, or the United States Automobile Association as it is more formally known, is a Texas-based financial giant that offers investment, insurance, and banking services to military personnel, their families, and veterans. USAA offers a variety of credit cards to those who serve, all of which offer great value.  The USAA Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature is one of our favorite USAA credit cards, as it offers robust savings and a whole bunch of perks that work for military families and personnel of all shapes and sizes. The Preferred Cash Rewards Visa earns unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases and comes with the typical global benefits that users expect from a Visa Signature credit card.  While 1.5% cash back isn’t as much as you’ll earn with the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus American Express Card, which earns 5% back on gas plus goods and services purchased on military bases, 2% back on the first $3,000 in grocery store purchases each year, and 1% back on everything else, the Visa Signature Cash Rewards Card benefits from Visa’s near-global acceptance – something AMEX simply cannot match.  Both cards don’t charge foreign transaction fees, meaning they won’t cost you more to use abroad, but American Express cards struggle for acceptance overseas, meaning if you are traveling for anything other than a deployment, the AMEX Cashback card won’t do you much good.

Navy Federal Visa Signature Flagship Rewards

Navy Federal Credit Union is another financial institution that admirably sets out to serve our men and women – and their families – that serve in the United States Armed Forces. Despite the name, Navy Federal is a credit union open to all U.S. service members and their families, and their Navy Federal Visa Signature Flagship Rewards Card is an excellent option for active service or veterans that like to travel but still want to earn excellent rewards on everyday purchases.  The card earns triple points on travel purchases (three points for every dollar spent) and double points on everything else. New accounts also benefit from an impressive 50,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in purchases in the first 90 days. Rewards points never expire – another great feature and one that our service members and their families can certainly appreciate.  The Flagship Rewards Visa Signature is a versatile travel card, and as such, it offers users no foreign transaction fee and the same global acceptance of Visa discussed earlier. Even better, cardholders receive a $100 statement credit as reimbursement for those enrolling in either Global Entry or TSA Precheck.

Navy Federal cashRewards Card

Like USAA, Navy Federal also offers a flat-rate 1.5% cash back card – the Navy Federal cashRewards Visa. Like USAA, the card earns unlimited cash back, no foreign transaction fees, and no annual fee. New accounts also receive a $250 statement credit when they spend $2,500 in purchases within the first 90 days – a nice 10% cash back bonus!

Navy Federal nRewards Secured Card

While travel perks and high-end rewards are great, the reality is that they aren’t available to everyone. For some, they need a helping hand with boosting their credit score and graduating into things like hotel rewards cards or cash back credit cards. They may even want to boost their credit so they can qualify for a mortgage or auto loan with the best rates.  Fortunately, Navy Federal understands that not everyone has perfect credit, and that’s why they offer the Navy Federal nRewards Secured MasterCard. The card is perfect for service members and families who want to boost their credit while still earning rewards in the process. The card earns a single point for every dollar spent on purchases – points that are applicable towards NavyFed’s nRewards Program, with redemptions such as cash back, merchandise, and gift cards. The reward-earning potential might not be the best, but it’s a feel-good feature that goes a long way to motivating cardholders to boost their credit.  Secured cards typically come with an annual fee, but the Navy Federal nRewards Secured Card does not, meaning there isn’t a punitive cost associated with building credit. Far too many lenders try to gouge people with bad credit to give them the privilege of opening a secured credit card account; the lack of an annual fee (as well as foreign transaction fees, balance transfer fees, or cash advance fees) is a great perk that shouldn’t be overlooked.
