About SunTrust

SunTrust is an American bank with its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The bank traces its roots back to 1891 and the Commercial Travelers’ Savings Bank of Atlanta.  In 1973, Trust Company of Georgia (which was the then name of Commercial Travelers’ Savings Bank of Atlanta) merged with First National Bank of Orlando to become SunBanks.

In 1995, after a series of mergers with banks in Florida, the name SunTrust was introduced. By the 2010s, SunTrust had over $200 billion in assets and over 1,200 branches.

In February of 2019, BB&T announced plans to acquire SunTrust Bank to create the sixth-largest bank in the United States in terms of assets. The newly merged bank would be known as Truist, with the merger confirmed in December of 2019.

While the Truist name is in use for the combined company, both SunTrust and BB&T still issue credit cards and other products through their original names.
