About Los Angeles Federal Credit Union

Los Angeles Federal Credit Union (LAFCU) is a federally chartered credit union that traces its roots to the Great Depression.

In 1936, 12 Los Angeles City employees formed the Los Angeles City Employees Credit Union with just $60 in deposits. By the end of the year, membership had grown to 18, and a federal charter granted. For the next 50+ years, the credit union operated out of the same location: a room inside Los Angeles City Hall at 200 North Spring Street.

In 1987, the name of the credit union changed to its present incarnation, Los Angeles Federal Credit Union. This name change reflected the growing scope of members and the union itself. Today, the credit union boasts over 69,000 members, 160 employees, and 7 locations in Greater Los Angeles.

Membership Eligibility

Who can join LAFCU? Membership is currently open to the following individuals:

  • Residents of Southern California who want to join via the Los Angeles Charitable Association (LACA). Those opting to join through the LACA can select from a one-time $10 donation, or an on-going $10 annual donation, which maintains their LACA membership.
  • Los Angeles City employees, volunteers, or retirees
  • Employees of Los Angeles Federal Credit Union
  • Immediate family of a current LAFCU member. Immediate family means an individual is a:
  • Parent
  • Stepparent
  • Grandparent
  • Spouse
  • Sibling
  • Stepsibling
  • Child
  • Stepchild
  • Adopted child
  • Foster child
  • Grandchild

To join Los Angeles Federal Credit Union, an aspiring member is required to open a Share Savings account. The minimum deposit is $20.

Branch Locations

LAFCU currently operates seven branches in the Greater Los Angeles area. The credit union also offers fee-free ATMs and shared branch locations through the Co-Op Network of credit unions.
