1Password Adds Virtual Credit Card Capabilities

Password management platform 1Password is branching out to offer its clients virtual credit cards. The new payment option will allow users to create virtual cards to make online purchases safer. Here are all the details of the new 1Password partnership with Privacy.com.

New Partnership means Greater Security When Making Online Purchases

Leading password management provider, 1Password, is now offering virtual credit cards. The new venture, in partnership with Privacy.com, allows members to create an unlimited amount of virtual credit cards for purchases made online.

The new feature is now available in the United States via the 1Password X extension for both the Google Chrome and Apple Safari web browsers.

What Are Virtual Credit Cards?

Virtual credit cards are temporary credit card numbers that a user generates to make online purchase safer. Since these cards are easily removed or canceled, they are an excellent way to prevent information or financial loss due to the hacking of an online merchant.

Virtual cards are a popular option for those who want to take advantage of a free trial but don’t want to worry about incurring charges if they forget to cancel the offer before the free period ends.

How to 1Password Virtual Cards Work?

The process for creating a virtual credit card through the 1Password X extension is straightforward:

  • The extension will display an option to create a virtual card number when entering payment information into the browser
  • Users can set a spending limit with the new card they create
  • Options are also available for on-time payments, monthly budgets, or to a set cap on spending
  • Users can then save the card to the 1Password manager for easy checkout on subsequent visits to the same retailer

The virtual cards are locked to a specific retailer adding further protection from hacking, theft, or other cybercrimes.

“Keep Your Data as Safe as Can Be”

The 1Password team hailed the new partnership with Privacy.com in a release announcing the move:

“We’re so pleased to add these features to 1Password – we’re pretty sure it’s new territory for password managers across the board. This partnership means we can now do for your money what we’ve always done for your passwords. Namely: create unique information for every service you use to keep your most important data as safe as can be.”
