The Chase Freedom Flex will earn 5% back on purchases at Walmart and with PayPal. The bank unveiled its latest 5% back categories earlier this week, with eligible cardholders earning 5% back on the first $1,500 in those categories from October until the New Year. Here are all the details:
Freedom Flex Q4 Bonus Categories Revealed
Chase has unveiled the new 5% back quarterly categories for its popular Freedom Flex World Elite Mastercard. Starting October 1 through December 31, Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cardmembers can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases on the following:
- PayPal: Cardmembers will automatically earn 5% cashback on eligible purchases made when checking out with PayPal at tens of millions of online businesses.
- Walmart: Cardmembers will automatically earn 5% cashback when shopping for gifts, groceries, and more at Walmart or Walmart.com. Purchases made using PayPal at Walmart will only earn a total of 5% cashback.
These 5% cash back quarterly categories are in addition to the 5% cash back Freedom Flex cardmembers already earn on travel purchased through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, plus the 3% cash back on dining and drugstore purchases, and 1% cash back on all other purchases made with the card.

“Each quarter, we look forward to giving cardmembers new opportunities to earn cashback on their everyday spending, and with our new Q4 categories, they can also get a jump on their holiday grocery shopping and find that perfect gift at the same time,” said Kristen Bowdoin, General Manager of Chase Freedom in a press release. “We are thrilled to bring back these two popular categories to make the holiday season more rewarding.”
Walmart a Popular Cash Back Category
The addition of Walmart as a 5% cash back category places the Freedom Flex in direct competition with the Discover It Cash Back. That card, which also offers rotating categories, features Walmart.com, Target.com, and Amazon.com as its Q4 5% categories.
Chase Freedom Flex cardmembers will enjoy their Q3 5% back categories through the end of September. Those categories include select streaming services and grocery stores (excluding larger stores like Target or Walmart. And since the Flex now offers 5% back on groceries for the first year to new cardmembers, that cash back potential jumps to 9% back at grocery stores through September 30.
