Walmart has been dipping its toes into the water for a showdown with Amazon for some time. First, the retail giant launched Vudu, its proprietary streaming service, followed by free two-day shipping. Now it’s going a step further. The company is launching a new membership service, Walmart+, and a new credit card to match. What Is Walmart+?

Walmart+ is the latest venture by the American retail corporation. The program, set to launch later this month, is Walmart’s answer to Amazon Prime. While more card issuers are seeking to roll back this benefit, Capital One is now adding it to some of its personal credit cards. Capital One personal credit cards that bear the World Mastercard or World Elite Mastercard branding will now offer Price Protection coverage. Previously, only Capital One Spark business cards provided this benefit to cardholders.

How Does Price Protection Work?

Price Protection is a form of purchase insurance. The benefit allows customers to get a refund for the difference if they purchase an item with their credit card, but find a better deal elsewhere. As one rewards expert puts it, “if you buy a laptop for $500, and it later becomes available from the same retailer or a different retailer for $400, Capital One will refund you $100.”

New Feature Details:

  • Capital One World or World Elite Mastercard holders may file a maximum of 4 claims per year, with a maximum of $250 per claim
  • Cardholders have 120 days from the purchase date to file a claim
  • Purchases must be made entirely with the eligible card
  • Capital One Visa cards are not eligible

Is the Feature Worth It?

Any additional protection for a cardholder is welcome news, but is Price Protection worth it? The short answer is yes, but other services provide a similar role. The Paribus service – also owned by Capital One, lets anyone sign up for instant alerts if their purchases are found elsewhere for less.

In many ways, the return of the Price Protection feature is nothing more than a consumer-friendly headline-grabber by Capital One. Still, the additional layer of customer service is nothing but a plus in the long-term.

Earlier this June, details of a SoFi credit card first emerged. Now, there is more information about the new card from the personal finance giant. Here’s everything we know so far about the new SoFi credit card:

SoFi Credit Card Details

The new SoFi credit card will feature no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. The card, a cash back card, will earn unlimited 2% back on all purchases.

The card will also be a World Elite Mastercard, meaning it will offer the full suite of Mastercard benefits. These perks and protections include:

  • Mastercard Luxury Hotel Collection: Complimentary upgrades, late checkout, and more at over 2,000 properties worldwide.
  • World Elite Concierge: 24/7 concierge service for airports, travel, and any other requests.
  • Cell Phone Protection: $1,000 in coverage per year ($600 per claim) if your phone suffers loss, theft, or damage. Cardholders must pay their phone bill with an eligible card. Terms and conditions apply.
  • ID Theft Protection: Protect, detect, alert, and resolve any issues related to identity theft involving your credit card.

According to a terms and conditions page issued by SoFi, the APR for the card will vary between 12.99% and 24.99%. Also of note, the card will not offer a signup bonus.

How Does the SoFi Mastercard Compare to Competitors?

Previously, rumors stated that the new SoFi credit card would have a $99 annual fee. It was also purported to offer multiple 5% cash back categories. While the removal of the 5% cash back categories is a negative, the unlimited 2% back is a nice consolation feature.

Other products that offer 2% cash back on all purchases include the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer and the Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card from Elan Financial Services. The Fidelity card is a great option for those with Fidelity investment accounts – and a direct competitor to the SoFi World Elite Mastercard. The Fidelity Visa Signature also features no annual fee and a comparable APR to SoFi (though the Fidelity has a APR).

For those not looking to bolster their investment portfolios with everyday purchases, the Citi Double Cash is the wise choice for a no-annual-fee, 2% cash back card. American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa are now seeking to streamline the digital payment process further, taking the technology to merchants in more countries around the world. The four payment networks have announced an expansion of Click to Pay – a simple, consistent digital checkout experience. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Click to Pay?

Click to Pay is a digital payment system that aims to make online checkout secure and straightforward.

The Click to Pay Program began in 2019. More than 10,000 merchants have allowed consumers the option of clicking to pay since then. Specifically, Click to Pay allows shoppers to have their card information securely stored. This does away with the process of having to input the entire credit card number and other details. Notable brands currently using the service include:

  • Crate & Barrel
  • Expedia

According to American Express, “the advanced digital checkout solution mirrors the consistent, interoperable checkout experience in physical stores – with one terminal to accept all card payments. American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa Cooperating to Lead the Charge

The Click to Pay online checkout platform is based on the EMV Secure Remote Commerce industry-standard, currently in use in countries such as Canada, Australia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, among others. Notably, EMV chip technology has been gaining traction in the United States, with Discover, Amex, Visa, and Mastercard making the feature more widely available.

To make checkout synchronized, all the four major payment networks are beginning work with their payments service providers, acquirers, and gateways in preparation for a fully streamlined online checkout experience for consumers.

According to a press release, U.S. partners including ACI Worldwide, Blackbaud, BlueSnap, Braintree (a PayPal Service), Cybersource, Global Payments, Aurus, Mastercard Payment Gateway Services, and Square are providing their merchants with the option to enable Click to Pay.

How to Earn Rewards with VOILÀ Rewards

Earning rewards in the VOILÀ loyalty program is very straightforward. Members earn VOILÀ points for every eligible dollar they on stays at any participating VOILÀ hotel. They also earn reward points on all purchases at those participating hotels.

Earning Points with VOILÀ Credit Cards

Rewards members can earn even more points through VOILÀ credit cards. The program currently offers two co-branded credit cards issued by Commerce Bank:

The VOILÀ Hotel Rewards Card earns 5X points per $1 on stays at participating hotels within the VOILÀ portfolio. Those 5X points per dollar spent are in addition to what members earn through their current program tier status (more on that below). Every other purchase with the card earns a single point per dollar spent. Cardholders also receive a 50% bonus on their purchases after they make $10,000 in purchases in a calendar year.

The LUXE Hotel Rewards Card differs from the VOILÀ Card in that stays at LUXE Hotels (part of the VOILÀ program) earn 5X points. Cardholders only earn 1X points on VOILÀ stays in general, but they can still enjoy additional points through their VOILÀ membership tier.

How to Redeem Points with VOILÀ Rewards

Rewards points apply to the VOILÀ Rewards program. The program offers limited redemption options but does provide excellent value for members and frequent guests.

Redeem Points for Free Nights

The most popular redemption method is stays with VOILÀ brands. Free nights start as low as 12,000 points, though there are restrictions with award nights. To redeem a free night, a VOILÀ Rewards member must have one eligible stay at a participating property within two years.

This requirement means that even though the 20,000-point signup bonus is enough for a free night, it isn’t redeemable right away.

Redeem Points with Partners

Points are also redeemable for gift cards with select partners. These partners include airlines like Virgin, American Airlines, and Ethiopian Airlines, plus major retailers. Redemptions for gift cards start as low as 1,000 points, though members will find better value through hotel stays.

Oneworld is the third-largest international alliance of leading airlines in the world. The airlines owned and operated coalition was founded in 1999 and currently consists of 15 member carriers, as well as numerous associate carriers that operate under the umbrella of at least one of the alliance members. Earning Oneworld Frequent Flyer Miles

After you join Oneworld, the easiest way to earn miles with Oneworld is by making bookings with a Oneworld member airline, or one of their associate airlines. All passengers need to do is provide their frequent flyer number when making their booking or checking in.

To earn miles the airline shown on the ticket, as well as the operating airline, must be a Oneworld member carrier. Additionally, the fare purchased must qualify for earning miles.

Miles are also applicable retroactively, provided the traveler has already flown, and the miles weren’t credited to the account.

Oneworld member credit cardholders can earn additional points or miles when making purchases with partners of Oneworld carrier partners – both in their home country and around the world. Ruby status is the lowest tier of membership in the Oneworld alliance. Aeroplan is currently offering members the chance to purchase miles at a significantly reduced rate. The offer, which runs through July 12, provides the prospects of an additional 75% more points when customers purchase Aeroplan miles through their Aeroplan account.

The offer – and value of miles – breaks down as follows:

  • 2,000 – 50,000 miles: 25% bonus (1.77¢ per mile)
  • 60,000 – 170,000 miles: 40% bonus (1.58¢ per mile)
  • 180,000 – 240,000 miles: 60% bonus (1.38¢ per mile)

Purchasing frequent flyer rewards points usually isn’t advisable – especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as travel has reduced significantly. For those who frequently travel with Air Canada (or another Star Alliance member), however, the offer might be too good to pass up. This is especially true for those willing to spend heavily.

The best redemption options for Aeroplan miles lie with award flights. Specific destinations, however, provide better value than others.

The best award flights come from Air Canada flights to/from the following regions:

  • Long-haul Canada / Continental U.S. flights
  • Flights to Hawaii
  • Flights to South America
  • Australasian flights (including Australasia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific)

The most expensive of these award options are Australia and the South Pacific, with flights starting from 90,000 miles. The least costly award routes are those long-haul flights in Continental North America – including Canada and the lower 48 states of the U.S.

The most expensive bonus miles offer currently available would require over $5,500 in spending for a haul of 250,000+ miles. With the 75% bonus applied, that total spend would equal 437,500 miles – good for five one-way flights from Vancouver to Sydney, or almost 18 one-way, long-haul flights in the Continental U.S. or Canada.

TD Aeroplan Visa Signature® Credit Card

There is no explicit language in the Air Canada terms and conditions that prohibits TD Aeroplan Visa Signature® credit cardholders from purchasing miles with their card. That card earns double miles on direct Air Canada purchases, meaning users can further enhance their miles haul. Of course, you should always double-check before using the card to make any bonus miles purchase.
