Save Big at the Pump with New M1 Rewards Categories

save-big-at-the-pump-with-new-m1-rewards-categories

Fintech M1 has made its popular Owner’s Rewards Card even more enticing with seven new brands to earn accelerated cash back. The new categories – in which cardholders earn 5% back if they own stock through M1 – can help cardholders save up to 5% back on gas at the pump.

M1 Rewards Adds Seven Brands to Bonus Cash Back Categories

The Owner’s Rewards Card by M1 is one of the more intriguing fintech and investment rewards credit cards on the market today. The card offers  2.5%, 5%, or 10% cash back when cardholders shop at select companies whose stock they own and 1.5% cash back on all other purchases should consumers choose not to invest in the brands. The cash back is automatically invested into their portfolio, helping to maximize rewards and grow long-term wealth through everyday transactions.

Now, M1 is making its Owner’s Rewards Program even more rewarding. The M1 Owner’s Rewards program has added seven new brands to their already impressive line-up of brands at which cardholders can earn up to 10% cash back on purchases. Starting today, cardholders will have greater opportunities to earn more cash back when shopping at select companies whose stock they own.

The new M1 bonus companies will help investors save big at the pumps with some of the biggest names in the fuel industry. The new companies include Amoco, BP, Chevron, Exxon, Mobil, and Texaco. Cardholders who invest in the six new fuel brands earn 5% cash back when they shop. Cardholders will also earn 2.5% back with communications and internet provider, Spectrum.

M1 Plus No Longer Required

The news of the new bonus cash back companies follows closely on the heels of previous M1 news about removing the need for M1 Plus. The Owner’s Rewards Card by M1 is now available to all M1 users rather than just M1 Plus users. This news means new applicants no longer need to join M1’s annual membership plan to get the most out of their M1 credit card.

M1 Plus is a $95 per year service that provides members access to a higher APY with the M1 Spend account, a special edition of the M1 Spend Visa® Debit Card (including their choice of five unique metal card designs), and more, including:

  • 2% loans through M1 Borrow. Members receive a 1.5% reduction on the base rate of M1 Borrow, the firm’s portfolio line of credit.
  • A special afternoon trading window if the account has more than $25,000 in the investment portfolio

NordVPN Warns of “Brute Force” Credit Card Theft

nordvpn-warns-of-brute-force-credit-card-theft

Last updated on August 24th, 2023

NordVPN is offering a warning for consumers to remain vigilant due to heightened cybersecurity risks because of the war in Ukraine. The security giant is shining a light on a sudden, crude, and dangerous type of credit card theft, known as a brute force attack.

Brute Forcing: A Worryingly Effective Credit Card Fraud Technique

Hacking a credit or debit card can take as few as six seconds, according to cybersecurity experts at NordVPN. The sheer speed of “brute force” attacks is one of the major reasons why the details of over four million payment cards have appeared on the dark web, they claim.

A study released by NordVPN analyzing approximately four million payment cards from 140 countries found that the most common method to hack a payment card is known as “brute forcing.” This form of cyberattack is incredibly quick and can be executed in a matter of seconds

“The only way such a huge number of payment cards could appear on the dark web is through brute forcing. That means that criminals basically try to guess the card number and CVV. The first six to eight digits are the card issuer’s ID numbers. That leaves hackers with seven to nine numbers to guess because the 16th digit is a checksum and is used only to determine whether any mistakes were made when entering the number. Using a computer, an attack like this can take only six seconds,” said Marijus Briedis, NordVPN’s chief technology officer.

How Do Brute Force Attacks on Credit Cards Work?

In a brute-force attack, a hacker uses a rapid trial-and-error approach to guess the correct password, PIN, or payment card number. It doesn’t require a lot of brainpower or complex algorithms – it’s merely a guessing game. However, the attack does require some resources – time, computing power, and a special type of software used by criminals.

“To guess the nine digits that are needed to have a full card number, a computer has to go through 1 billion combinations. And it will only take one minute for a typical computer, which can try around 25 billion combinations per hour. However, a criminal may need only seven digits to make a correct guess depending on the card issuer. In this case, six seconds would be enough,” added Briedis.

Most card issuers limit the number of guesses you can make in a short time to prevent these kinds of attacks. Still, criminals find ways to get around the limitations. Mastercard, for example, has a centralized authentication system. So a criminal can only try around ten times with one number before Mastercard’s centralized system detects that. A criminal can try 30 to 40 times with the Visa security system, perhaps even more. And if they pick the right time of day, when it’s really busy, they can try many more times because it has a decentralized, federated system.

This observation correlates with the fact that more than a half (2,524,142 instances) of all the discovered payment cards were Visa, followed by Mastercard (1,602,248 instances), and American Express (215,971 instances).

How to Protect Yourself from Brute Force Attacks

There is little users can do to protect themselves from this threat, short of abstaining from card use entirely. The most important thing is to stay vigilant.

“Review your monthly statement for suspicious activity and respond quickly and seriously to any notifications from your bank that your card may have been used in an unauthorized manner. Another recommendation is to have a separate bank account for different purposes and only keep small amounts of money in the one your payment cards are connected to. Some banks also offer temporary virtual cards you can use if you don’t feel safe while shopping online,” Briedis suggests.

Other options to protect your online payments include using a third-party payments platform, like PayPal. Services like PayPal offer an additional layer of protection when making payments online, keeping your credit card, debit card, or even prepaid card details away from cyber-thieves. The PayPal service is also accepted in over 200 countries worldwide and at millions of U.S. retailers – online and in-store.

Rates & Fees

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is a grocery juggernaut despite its $95 annual fee (or perhaps because of the fee). The card earns an impressive 6% back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, plus 6% back on select streaming services, 3% back on gas and transit, and more. That 6% back on groceries is very impressive – especially given that the card’s closest competitor, the Savor Rewards Card from Capital One, offers just 3% cash back on groceries for a similar annual fee.

For those not looking to pay an annual fee, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card is another option to consider. The Blue Cash Everyday offers 3% cash back on groceries, plus 2% cash back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores for no yearly charge.

Earn Stock Rewards with the TAP Flow Debit Card

earn-stock-rewards-with-the-tap-flow-debit-card

Utah-based TAB Bank has announced a new checking account and debit card. The new TAB Flow Card offers cardholders up to 1% back in stock rewards from companies like Amazon, McDonald’s, Chevron, Walmart, Disney, and Starbucks.

TAB Bank Announces New Stock Rewards Debit Card

TAB Bank is Ogden, Utah-based fintech and digital bank. The bank offers a full selection of banking products for small businesses and consumers. Despite having no physical branches, TAB Bank is fully FDIC-insured. TAB Bank is now hyping a new debit card and checking account combination, called TAB Flow.

About TAB Flow

TAB Flow offers accountholders rewards, which isn’t unheard of. There are plenty of rewards debit and prepaid cards on the market, including the Current Debit Visa Card, the Fold Visa, and Aspiration’s debit card.

TAB Flow differs because it offers 0.5% back as stock with select retailers. In this regard, TAP Flow is somewhat similar to the M1 Visa Debit Card. However, that card works with an investment account and doesn’t directly provide stock rewards.

The TAB Flow debit card and checking account features contactless payment and digital wallet compatibility, no overdraft fees, budgeting tools, and more. And a Mastercard debit card, the TAP Flow Card features a selection of protections, including Mastercard Global Services, ID Theft Protection and credit monitoring, and Mastercard Airport Concierge (for an additional charge).

The Tab Flow product is currently at the waitlist stage, with interested consumers able to sign up here.

“Help Consumers Start Saving”

“Wealth is built by owning assets. We all work for a living, I get a paycheck, so I want to figure out how I’m going to take that money and build wealth,” said TAB Bank CEO and Bank President Curt Queyrouze in a release. “Ownership is extremely important to create that foundation of financial strength and then build upon it and then participate.

“I think everybody now can have the opportunity to participate, and we believe this is the right way to get people in. It’s not as scary when you’re not putting your own capital at risk,” he added. “If you just have cash back and you have $1,000 in your checking account, and at the end of the month, I put an extra $5 in your checking account, it just gets spent, right? It’s just fungible; even if we put it in a savings account, you can tie your savings account checking account together, and it just gets spent.

“The stock is separate, and in order to take it out of the stock fund, you have to actually liquidate your ownership and transfer, so there’s a natural barrier. It is not as fungible as the money that gets deposited in your account, and that helps people not only create that savings account but maintain it because it is separate and it has its own kind of behavioral engagement. And people are reluctant to then liquidate stocks out where they might have seen some value creation, and they’ll look at other alternatives. So this was the best solution we saw to help consumers start saving.”

Last updated on April 6th, 2023

Huntington National Bank has launched a new cashback credit card: the Huntington® Cashback Credit Card. The new card offers 1.5% unlimited cash back on every purchase, with no annual or foreign transaction fees.

Huntington National Bank Launches New Cash Back Credit Card

Huntington National Bank is an Ohio-based financial institution with over 900 branches across seven U.S. states. The bank offers a variety of financial products to businesses and consumers, including a range of credit cards under the Voice banner.

The bank has launched a new cash rewards credit card, the Huntington® Cashback Credit Card. The World Elite Mastercard earns unlimited cash back rewards at a rate of 1.5% back for every $1 spent on purchases. There are no caps to rewards, no annual fees, and no foreign transaction fees.

The unlimited 1.5% cash back with the Huntington Cashback Credit Card is on par with several popular options from larger banks. The most glaring similarities are the Chase Freedom Unlimited and American Express Cash Magnet, which provide the same 1.5% cash back on every purchase. The card also earns the same rewards rate as the Discover It Miles, though that card technically earns points instead of cash back.

Huntington Fair Play Banking

What sets Huntington apart from some banks is its “Fair Play Banking” philosophy, which the bank launched over a decade ago. This Fair Play Banking process removes many of the frustrating features of other credit cards, including hidden fees and confusing redemption options. Cash back never expires as long as the account is in good standing, and cardholders can opt for automatic monthly redemptions or redeem their rewards manually

Huntington National Bank’s Fair Play Banking also provides “Late Fee Grace.” This popular feature provides an additional day on the grace period to make a payment and avoid late fees. Cardholders also enjoy no penalty fee pricing, meaning their APR will never rise – even if they miss a payment.

Curve Launches in United States

curve launches in us

Last updated on August 11th, 2022

Fintech Curve has finally launched in the United States. The new service allows users to track all their finances and transactions in one place (including credit cards), offering a cashback and up to 10% back on purchases.

Curve Now Available in the United States

The hotly anticipated Curve has finally arrived in the U.S. Previously available in Europe, the platform lets users track their finances and spending by linking bank and credit card accounts in one place.

The launch includes the new Curve All in One Card. The Curve, All in One Card, differs from other credit cards because it is truly an “all in one” product. The card – and associated Curve app – allows users to consolidate multiple credit cards into one payment card and make purchases anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

Curve Features

Beyond its “all in one” approach to rewards, the Curve Card offers some impressive features. Chief among the unique Curve features is the innovative “Time Travel” option that allows cardholders to retroactively move charges from one card to another – helping them maximize rewards.

Time Travel

“Time Travel” is an innovative feature that all cardholders will enjoy. This feature allows Curve Cardholders to retroactively move charges from one card to another. The Time Travel benefit lets you switch charges to another card that offers better rewards or lower APR.

Anti-Embarrassment Tool

“Anti-Embarrassment” is Curve’s unique system to avoid the embarrassment of a declined card at checkout. Curve Credit swoops in automatically if the user’s selected card doesn’t go through, so they can pay without the panic of a failed transaction.

When using the Curve platform, users pay the merchant and charge their credit cards. All transactions will still appear on the individual cards statements, but it will be made clear that the purchase was made through Curve.

Curve Credit

“Curve Credit” is the fintech’s Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) service. The feature allows Curve members to at a later date or in installments through a payment plan. Customers will get the option to pay back in 3, 6, or 12-month installments.

Curve Rewards

The curve platform also provides rewards outside of issuer credit card rewards (think Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, Amex Membership Rewards). While the full rewards structure for U.S. members isn’t fully known, what is known is that those signed up to the Curve waitlist will enjoy 1% cash back on all purchases for the first six months. This 1% cash back bonus is in addition to the rewards the user would typically earn on their current credit card.

Waitlist users can increase their odds of reaching the top 100 by referring friends, family, or anyone else to the Curve waitlist. Users can jump 50 spots with each successful referral. The fintech previously announced an impressive 10% cash back to the top 100 users on the waitlist for six months.

“Put people in Better Control of Their Money”

“Curve is evolving, and to launch in the U.S. is an incredibly exciting milestone for us. Americans hold four debit cards and credit cards on average, which we aim to simplify down to one card and one app to put people in better control of their money,” said Shachar Bialick, CEO and founder of Curve.

“It’s also a challenging time for consumer finances in the U.S. Inflation is at an all-time high, and rate hikes are on the horizon. By empowering U.S. customers with their finances, we hope to help more people towards a better financial future.”
