Milestone Vs. Indigo Card: Read This Before Applying

milestone-vs-indigo-card-read-this-before-applying

Last updated on September 21st, 2023

Choosing a credit card when you have bad credit or are new to building credit can be challenging. There are dozens of subprime credit cards on the market – and that’s before you even begin to factor in secured credit cards.

The Milestone Mastercard and Indigo Mastercard are two popular credit builder options. Both cards are issued through Genesis Financial Services and provide a reliable platform for demonstrating financial maturity and improving credit. But because the two cards are very similar it can be tough to pick the right card for your needs.

Before you apply for your next credit card, check out this helpful guide that breaks down both the Milestone and Indigo Mastercard, their strengths, weaknesses, and the finer points that can help you make an informed decision.

At a Glance

Do Credit Builder Credit Cards Work?

First off, do credit builder cards like Indigo actually work? The simple fact is that credit repair credit cards, like the Milestone Mastercard, serve a vital role in establishing a positive credit history. And this is a role in which these credit cards for bad credit have been successful.

The growth of the US consumer credit card market in the 21st century is impressive. The total number of credit cardholders in the United States is expected to top 193 million by 2023. That number increased around 17% from 2000 when approximately 160 million Americans held credit cards.

Year Average Credit Score
2012 690
2013 691
2014 692
2015 695
2016 699
2017 700
2018 704
2019 706
2020 710
2021 716
2022 714

The credit score trend rose upward during that period, with exceptional growth over the last decade (as seen in the charts above and below). This shows that Americans have been making better choices with their credit card, despite more cards in circulation.

good credit habits growth
Credit data courtesy of FICO

While credit builder credit cards aren’t entirely to thank for the improved credit score of the average American, their role cannot be understated. These cards:

  • Provide credit access to millions of Americans otherwise unserved
  • Offer the chance to establish, build, or repair credit
  • Provide entry to more lucrative rewards many would otherwise miss out on

Milestone Mastercard or Indigo Mastercard: Which Is Right for You?

Now that you understand the positive impacts of subprime credit cards on consumer finances, which options are best for you? Both Indigo Mastercard and Milestone Mastercard enjoy popularity among credit-building Americans – but which is best? Here is the breakdown of the cards over key credit categories:

Pre-Qualification Before Applying

Applying for a credit card requires a credit check. Often, these credit checks (or credit inquiries) are known as “hard inquiries,” meaning the bank pulls your full credit report before approving (or denying) your credit card application. If you apply for a credit card and are declined, your credit score will likely take a small hit.

One way to avoid a negative impact on your credit score before getting a new credit card is by pre-qualifying before you apply. Though they may sound similar, pre-qualification and pre-approval are not the same things.

A pre-approval means that a lender has analyzed your credit profile based on existing credit information it holds, offering a product you will likely be approved for. On the other hand, pre-qualification means the lender has reviewed financial information from a credit profile and believes you may be a good fit for the credit card product. Pre-qualifications are also known as “soft inquiries,” as they have no impact on your credit score.

Do the Milestone and Indigo Cards Offer Pre-Qualification?

Both the Indigo Card and the Milestone Card offer a quick pre-qualification for potential applicants. This feature makes both cards versatile offers for anyone looking to boost their credit score but afraid they may not qualify due to late payments, bankruptcies, or other negative financial events.

Credit Score Needed

Because both cards are designed for those building or repairing credit, the typical FICO credit score for an applicant for the Milestone and Indigo Cards is around 600 to 640. Both credit cards are available for applicants with credit scores ranging from 300 to 850.

Annual Fees

Annual fees with credit repair cards vary significantly. Cardholders can expect a higher annual fee the lower their starting FICO or VantageScore credit score. As a general rule, expect to pay a yearly fee of up to $100 for a credit card of this type, with some charging significantly higher fees and no annual fees.

The Milestone Mastercard features a variable annual fee of between $35 and $99. Again, these yearly fees will vary depending on your offer. Like Milestone, Indigo also features a variable annual fee. Unlike Milestone, however, some Indigo Card applicants may qualify for a card with no annual fee. Other applicants may receive an annual fee rising as high as $99 per year.

Starting Credit Limits

The Milestone Mastercard has a $300 credit limit. Because Milestone charges the annual fee immediately, the starting credit limit will vary between $201 and $265. Once the annual fee is paid, the credit limit will return to $300.

The Indigo Mastercard has a $300 credit limit to start. This actual credit available may vary depending on the annual fee, however. Like the Milestone Card, Genesis Financial charges the annual fee upon card activation, meaning the starting credit limit runs between $201 and $300.

Rewards

Neither Indigo nor Milestone offers cash back rewards or points. There are no 0% intro APR periods or sign-up bonuses.

Recap

Here is a quick recap of all the features of both cards:

Milestone Mastercard

Lees-than-perfect credit welcome

Quick, online pre-qualification

Variable annual fees of up to $99 per year

$300 starting credit limit

Regular reporting to 3 major credit bureaus

Indigo Mastercard

Bad credit, credit building

Pre-qualify with no credit impact

Fees vary between no annual fee and up to $99 per year

$300 starting credit limit

Regular reporting to 3 major credit bureaus

Things to Consider Before Applying for a Bad Credit Credit Card

Before deciding on any credit card, take the time to think about all aspects of the cards under consideration. Weigh the rates and fees against each other to see if your spending patterns match the card’s profile.

Here are a few issues to consider before choosing a credit repair credit card:

APR

One of the key metrics many credit card applicants consider before applying is the card’s APR – or interest rate on purchases. However, for cards like the Milestone and Indigo Mastercards, interest rates are secondary to annual fees, credit reporting to the major bureaus, and credit limit increases.

Instead of focusing on the card’s APR, focus on keeping your credit use low and repaying your full balance before the statement period ends. These steps will have a much greater impact on your credit health and negate the high APR.

Annual Fee Vs. Security Deposit

In many cases, secured credit cards feature lower annual fees than unsecured credit cards for bad credit. This lower annual fee is due to the requirement of a security deposit (usually around $200) that acts as collateral for the credit loan – and the credit limit.

Because of this deposit requirement, secured cards may be more cost-prohibitive for new applicants than cards like Milestone, Indigo, Surge Platinum , or countless others. Before deciding on the right credit repair card for you, consider the upfront costs associated with each option. In some cases, an unsecured card might offer greater flexibility that can help offset emergencies.

The Best Credit Cards for Fair Credit

Best Credit Cards for Fair Credit of 2021

Last updated on August 23rd, 2023

Credit card for excellent credit (like the Platinum Card from Amex, the Chase Sapphire Reserve) and bad credit score cards (like secured cards) tend to get the most traffic – and headlines – on sites like BestCards. But what about credit cards for people with fair credit? There are a huge assortment of credit cards for average credit, so we’ve broken them down – here are our picks for the best credit cards for fair or average credit.

The Best Credit Cards for Average Credit

Bouncing back from a bankruptcy, default, or other negative credit event can be challenging. Secured credit cards offer the easiest lifeline when it comes to credit, but the deposit requirement means their spending potential is limited for most consumers.

Reaching a “fair” credit score (a FICO Score between 580 and 669) offers the opportunity for better credit options, inducing unsecured credit cards. Unsecured credit cards for fair credit provide access to revolving credit without the need for a deposit.

Earn 3% Back with the PayPal Mastercard

earn-3-back-with-the-paypal-mastercard

Last updated on April 7th, 2023

The PayPal Cashback Mastercard just got a whole lot better. Synchrony has announced major changes to the cash back credit card, with cardholders now earning 3% back on PayPal purchases in addition to the already impressive 2% back on all purchases.

Synchrony Makse Changes to the PayPal Cashback Mastercard

Significant changes are coming to the PayPal Cashback Mastercard from Synchrony. New and existing PayPal Mastercard cardholders will soon earn an unlimited 3% cash back on PayPal purchases – with no caps on the total amount of rewards earnable. That 3% back is on top of the unlimited 2% cash back cardholders already earn on all other purchases anywhere that  Mastercard is accepted worldwide.

The ability to earn 3% back on PayPal is exceptional. The service already provides extensive online coverage, but many retailers and restaurants are beginning to accept PayPal QR codes as a payment method. This, in turn, means the opportunities to earn up to 3% back continue to grow.

paypal cash back mastercard interface

The PayPal Cashback Mastercard is like many other cash back credit cards, but with a key difference. Cash back is applicable towards the minimum balance due, depositing in external bank accounts, or a user’s existing PayPal account for making purchases at more than 35 million locations (and growing). Most card issuers wait until the end of the monthly billing cycle before debiting points or rewards. The cash back rewards with Synchrony’s PayPal credit card are available online almost immediately.

New Welcome Bonus

Synchrony is also adding a new sign-up bonus for new applicants. Once the 3% cash back on PayPal purchases offer goes live, new PayPal Mastercard applicants will earn applicants a $100 welcome bonus after the first $500 spent on purchases in the first three months.

Coming Soon

“Our customers shopped across 34 different categories last year, showcasing the diversity of their needs and interests, and we wanted to build a credit product that was flexible and better-matched rewards with their spending behaviors,” said Susan Schmidt, VP of Consumer Credit, PayPal, in a statement accompanying the news.

The waitlist for the relaunch is available here. Currently, there is no known public date for the card’s relaunch.

BNPL Loans May Soon Count Towards Credit Scores

Last updated on March 17th, 2023

Buy Now, Pay Later loans have gained popularity at store (and online) checkouts. Last year, 45 million Americans used BNPL services, an increase of 220% since 2020. But soon, BNPL loans may affect credit scores. Here’s what you need to know:

What Is BNPL?

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services have become a popular financing option among consumers in the past couple of years. While the idea has been around for decades, BNPL services are more relevant in recent times due to the coronavirus pandemic’s financial effects on borrowers. BNPL services have created their market in the world of loans. The service divides a purchase into installment loans of multiple equal payments. Often these payment plans include interest charges and fees; however, some providers charge neither. Hence the appeal among borrowers, especially Gen Z.

Some of the big names in the BNPL industry include fintech companies like Affirm and Klarna. But credit card providers also serve their customers with the convenience of BNPL options. For example, there’s Slice by First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO), Plan It (from Amex), My Chase Plan (from Chase), and more. In the same vein, all Upgrade Credit Cards work in installment loans promising fixed rates and predictable payments.

How BNPL Loans Will Affect Your Credit

Today’s credit scoring models are designed to assess risk based on payment behaviors for mainstream credit products, unlike BNPL loans. However, the three major credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion – will start collecting data from BNPL purchases, according to their press release. To clarify, the collected data will not negatively influence consumer credit scores just yet.

Major Credit Bureaus and New BNPL Reporting

Credit Bureaus have a plan in place to avoid negative credit score impacts. For instance, in the spring of 2022, Experian will unveil the Buy Now, Pay Later Bureaus ™. Its purpose is to give lenders visibility into financial inclusion and risk assessment while preventing a negative effect on consumer credit scores.

Similarly, TransUnion has introduced its new Point-of-Sale Suite of Solutions. Liz Pagel, Senior Vice President and Consumer Lending Business Leader at TransUnion explained, “TransUnion’s approach helps lenders and consumers ensure credit activity is captured in a manner that maximizes benefits for consumers and to the overall credit ecosystem.” The Point-of-Sale Suite of Solutions is meant to help people get credit for payments made towards BNPL loans.

Moreover, Equifax will be the only one of three bureaus to include BNPL loans in core credit score calculations. Ultimately, it is the BNPL provider’s choice to report the BNPL data to Equifax or how to incorporate it.

What Does This Mean For You?

BNPL users may think the service can easily replace their credit cards, and that may be because of how easy it is to use. The equally divided installment loans make a more manageable monthly payment for purchases that may not fit your budget. However, the financial access BNPL loans provide doesn’t come without penalty. These types of loans may still charge fees for late or missed payments, but as mentioned previously, not all BNPL services charge interest. Above all, the majority will not impact your credit scores. However, it’s easy to get carried away and dig a debt hole in your pockets. For these reasons, it’s crucial to practice discipline when paying back BNPL loans, mainly because it may affect your credit score in the future.

About the Robinhood Cash Card

The biggest feature of the Robinhood Cash Card is the option to automatically invest in assets like stocks and crypto when making purchases. “The younger generation is debit card-primary, so that is a primary focus,” said Robinhood’s Chief Product Officer Aparna Chennapragada. He added that Robinhood was trying to capitalize on a consumer shift towards debit cards and digital/online spending.

Rewards Debit Cards Continue to Enjoy Popularity

The new Robinhood Cash Card isn’t the only debit card that lets users. Other apps, like Chime and Acorns Grow, also allow spare change investing. The M1 Spend Visa debit card synch seamlessly with an existing investment account to allow spending of dividends and investment sales. Cardless to Launch LATAM Credit Card in 2022

cardless-to-launch-latam-credit-card-in-2022

Last updated on March 7th, 2024

Cardless and Delta-owned South American airline LATAM are partnering for a new co-branded credit card. The new LATAM Airlines credit card program will combine the lucrative earning potential of LATAM Pass with the digital facing technological expertise of Cardless.

Cardless and LATAM Airlines to Launch Airline Rewards Credit Card

Fintech Cardless had quite the 2021. The company launched various co-branded rewards cards with some of the biggest names in sports, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Manchester United, Miami Marlins, and Boston Celtics. That hot streak continued with the launch of the New Orleans Pelicans Mastercard earlier this year.

Now, Cardless is hyping the launch of another upcoming co-branded credit card – but this new offering isn’t with a major league sports franchise. LATAM, a Santiago, Chile-based international airline, and Cardless will launch a new co-branded United States credit card program for avid American travelers – the LATAM Airlines credit card.

Cardless credit cards offer several features designed for digital-native consumers via security and easy access. Potential applicants can quickly apply using their smartphones. A virtual card will be delivered to their mobile wallet seconds upon approval. The entire Cardless process operates through the fintech’s intuitive app, including synching the accountholder’s bank information for seamless payments and no-fuss account management.

The upcoming LATAM Cardless credit card will be the South American carrier’s first U.S. consumer credit card since the ending of the airline’s previous relationship with U.S. Bank several years ago. That relationship included three co-branded airline credit cards: the LATAM Visa Signature, LATAM Visa, and the LATAM Secured Visa.

“We Can’t Wait”

“We are beyond thrilled to be joining forces with LATAM in our first foray into travel rewards credit cards,” said Michael Spelfogel, President and Co-Founder of Cardless, in a statement. “Moving beyond entertainment and leisure, travel rewards are an absolute necessity in the 21st century – a fact that the isolation of the past two years has only intensified. We can’t wait to help LATAM reward their customers with tangible benefits that bring people across the world back together.”

“We strive to continuously improve our customer experience, and this new partnership seeks to offer more options for accumulating miles through a simpler and more intuitive digital experience. Fintech companies are pioneers in adaptability and flexibility with the end-user in mind. The LATAM Airlines Credit Card program exemplifies this.”, added Paola Peñarete, Vice President of Sales for North America, Caribbean, Mexico, and Asia, LATAM Airlines Group.
