About Netspend

Netspend is a leading issuer of prepaid debit cards. Unlike other prepaid issuers, like Green Do or American Express, however, Netspend does not issue secured credit cards.

Netspend claims to serve an estimated 68 million underbanked Americans through their products. Netspend prepaid cards offer the convenience of loading, reloading, and purchasing; security; and freedom of use wherever the American Express, Visa, or Mastercard logo appears (depending on the card product).

The Netspend name dates to 1999, and the launch of the brand by the Sosa bothers. By 2002 the company had over 100,000 active cards. That number rose to more than 1.5 million by 2008, with a new PayPal partnership in 2009, further accelerating growth.

Today, the issuer has over 68 million cards in circulation, with major partners worldwide. Major Netspend partners currently include:

  • Walmart
  • WWE
  • MLB
  • PayPal
  • Western Union
  • 7-11
