Home & Garden Showplace Discover® Review

The Home & Garden Showplace Discover® is offered by Comenity Bank and has no annual fee. Cardholders can earn modest rewards on garden and hardware purchases at either Home & Garden Showplace or True Value, which can then be applied for savings at checkout in $10 increments.

While the Home & Garden Showplace credit card does not offer a signup bonus, it does feature special deferred-interest financing for 6 months, making it an acceptable (although quite unremarkable) rewards card option for updating your landscaping. How does the special financing work? Purchases must be a minimum of $299 and paid in full within the 6-month period in order to remain interest-free. Failing to meet this deadline will result in the regular purchase APR being retroactively applied and undoing any savings you would have achieved.

Earning & Redeeming Rewards

Earning potential is run-of-the-mill with typical returns in typical categories:

  • 3% on garden/hardware purchases
  • 2% back on gas and groceries
  • 1% for all other purchases

Cardholders can earn points beyond the interest of homeowners…but whether you would actually want to use the card outside of landscape-related purchases is unlikely. Why? The incredibly unrealistic and unworthwhile point redemption rate.

The minimum number of points needed for redemption is 1,000 and is equivalent to a $10 voucher. How does this translate to your wallet? Well, in order to earn 1,000 points from the top-earning category, landscape-related purchases, one would have to spend $33,333 dollars (we checked the math, twice and that’s the lowest spend requirement) – that’s an inordinate amount of money to spend for a measly $10 reward.

Should You Apply for the Home & Garden Showplace Discover?

The casual hardware shopper may have trouble earning enough points for even the smallest redemption amount since it requires a spend of $33,333 to earn enough points for the $10 voucher. In comparison, spending that same amount with Chase Freedom Unlimited (which provides a flat 1.5% cash back) would generate $500 for the cardholder’s pocket.

Despite the additional bonuses for gas and groceries and that the card can be used at parent company’s locations (True Value), the earning capabilities of the Home & Garden Showplace credit card are incredibly weak. The only real benefit of this card is the special financing – and even then, the card makes you jump through hoops.

The required spend amount to earn a $10 award is too high for the average homeowner and is an extremely bad value. Even professional landscapers wouldn’t be able to wring any longstanding value out of this card, and would no doubt be able to find more lucrative savings through a general rewards card with home improvement rewards such as the Business Advantage Cash Rewards Mastercard® from Bank of America.
