Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card Review

The Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card is a cash back rewards card for students that offers accelerated cash back and the ability to establish a strong credit history – with a card with no annual fee or foreign transaction fees.

How to Earn Cash Back

The Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card is similar to the everyday SavorOne version in that it offers accelerated cash back rewards in popular everyday categories. The card earns an unlimited 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, grocery store, and select streaming services purchases.

Streaming services with the student version of the SavorOne include big names in music, TV., and film streaming, including Hulu, Dinsey+, and Netflix. However, unlike other streaming credit cards, audiobook services like Audible, plus some services, such as Prime Video, AT&T TV, and Verizon FIOS On Demand, are excluded from the 3% back category. Additionally, box stores (like Walmart or Target) may be excluded from grocery store purchases.

SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Cardholders also enjoy special savings on purchases through Vivid Seats. Vivid Seats is an online ticket marketplace where fans can buy and sell tickets to sports, concerts, and theater events. The marketplace’s purchases of event tickets earn an impressive 8% cash back through January 31, 2023.

All other purchases earn 1% back, so they’ll still get something in return no matter what students buy with it. A card with such an impressive rate of cash back at grocery stores with no annual fee is always a welcome addition to the wallet of any undergraduate (or graduate) student.

How to Redeem Rewards

Capital One Rewards do not expire for the life of the account and are redeemable for a variety of options. Potential award options include cash back as a statement credit, gift cards from hundreds of leading retailers, or for making purchases with Amazon or via PayPal Pay with Points.

Designed for Students Only

Unlike the other Savor products (the Savor Cash rewards and the SavorOne Cash Rewards) the Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card is designed with college students in mind. Capital one defines a student as “anyone currently enrolled, or admitted and planning to enroll in the next three months, at an accredited university, community college or other higher education institution.” In this regard the card fares comparably to Chase’s Freedom®
Student Credit Card
.

This broad definition opens up the availability of the card to newly graduated high school seniors, as well as those new to credit but starting their graduate studies. Because student credit cards offer an easier approval process than regular credit cards, this means the Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card is an excellent option to establish a strong credit history.

Once a student with this card graduates, they keep their card *and rewards) and enjoy the benefits of the regular version of the Capital One SavorOne Card.

Other Card Features

Other notable features of the Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card include:

  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Extended warranty protection on eligible items that are purchased with the credit card
  • Travel accident insurance for a covered loss at no extra charge when students use their credit card to purchase their fare
  • 24/7 travel assistance services
  • Complimentary concierge service through Capital One
  • Access to Capital One Shopping online deals portal
  • No balance transfer fees

Should You Apply for the Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card?

Student credit cards can be a mixed bag – but that is certainly not the case with the Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card. The card, which features no annual fee, no balance transfer fees, and no foreign transaction fees, provides exceptional rewards in categories students can enjoy.

Gaining experience with credit cards can be daunting, and this is especially true for starter credit cards that don’t offer much beyond access to an unsecured line of credit. However, the Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card offers impressive cash back on purchases – letting students of any age gain experience with revolving credit – and rewarding them at the same time.
