The Platinum Card from American Express continues to be one of the premier options for those who love to travel. In tandem with the Amex Gold Card, the Platinum offers impeccable rewards, impressive perks, and luxurious benefits and services. According to reports from American Express, however, both cards will soon have new features. Here are the facts so far about the new American Express Platinum Card benefits.

What We Know So Far

News of the new Gold and  Platinum Card benefits came during the company’s first-quarter financials call. “We are adding several new benefits, services, and rewards to our premium card products,” the company stated. It also announced changes to the popular Membership Rewards program – including new rewards.

What those changes might be is up for debate. The Platinum Card already provides a wealth of perks for cardholders, including industry-leading airport lounge access and elite status at several hotel rewards programs. Since the Gold Card lacks many of these perks, the new features may boost the standing of that card – especially given the decent travel perks of the Amex Green Card.

Financial Assistance for Customers During Coronavirus?

More likely, however, is enhanced payment protection or even a change from the current charge card status of the card. Amex also stated that most changes would be “relevant to the evolving needs of our customers during this time.” Given some of the inherent issues of charge cards – namely the need to pay in full each month – more flexibility here would undoubtedly be welcome.

New Features a Welcome Bonus for Customers

New features for the Platinum Card will be a welcome bonus for existing cardholders and may spur further applications. While the Amex Platinum is exceedingly popular, the card has numerous challengers in the luxury card space.

Chief among those vying for the title of best premium credit card is the Chase Sapphire Reserve, though the Mastercard Black Card has been closing the gap significantly. Both offer Priority Pass Select lounge access and a competitive APR. However, the Mastercard Black Card further benefits from enhanced travel perks, complimentary membership in a variety of services that provide everyday value, and a lower annual fee.
