Coronavirus credit card payment breaks are ending for millions of Americans. What can you do if your credit card deferment and payment relief is ending, but you still can’t make your payments? Here is everything you need to know:

Coronavirus Payment Relief

The coronavirus pandemic caused millions of Americans to either lose their jobs or find themselves short on hours. This sharp rise in unemployment (or underemployment) resulted in fears of widespread credit card defaults.

Fortunately, nearly every credit card issuer offered some form of payment relief during the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. These payment relief and payment holiday plans involved some of the following:

  • Deferred payments (with or without interest)
  • Delayed payments
  • Waiving of fees (including late fees or annual fees)

What Can You Do If Your Coronavirus Credit Card Relief Period Ends?

Coronavirus payment relief ended on October 31st for millions of Americans. With the end of the U.S. credit card payment holiday, what can consumers do if they still fear falling behind on their credit card payments?

The most important thing to remember for those with concerns about making credit card payments is to always be proactive. Always ensure you keep in touch with your lenders – including your credit card company or bank.

Many banks and lenders offer ongoing payment relief for customers – including forbearance. Forbearance is a period where accounts do not require payment. Keep in mind, though, that any balances could still accrue interest when in forbearance.

Lenders typically only offer forbearance or payment plans when customers ask for them, however. This is where being proactive is essential. If you believe you may struggle to meet your financial obligations, contact your credit card company and discuss payment options with them – don’t expect them to call you.
