Advertiser Disclosure Editorial Disclosure

Chase has announced the Q3 2021 5% cash back categories for two of its popular Freedom credit cards. From January 1, cardmembers can earn up to $1,500 in cash back rewards using their cards for groceries, Target, or gym membership and fitness. Here’s what you need to know about the 2023 Chase Freedom Cash Back Calendar:

Chase Announces 2023 Cash Back Calendar

Chase has announced the Q1 2023 5% cash back categories for two of its most popular cash back credit cards, the Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom (no longer accepting new applicants). Starting January 1, 2023, eligible Chase Freedom credit cardmembers earn 5% back on the first $1,500 in combined spending in three bonus categories.

So, what are the cash back categories for Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cards for January through March 2023? The following categories made the cut for Q1:

  • Target: A new quarterly category for Chase Freedom, Target offers the opportunity to save on everything from clothing to home goods, electronics, toys, and more.
    • Note: Qualifying grocery store purchases made at Target will only earn a total of 5%.
  • Grocery Stores (excluding Walmart): Cardmembers can earn cash back on purchases for cooking and dining at home (a welcome reprieve after a holiday season of dining out!).
    • Additionally, cardmembers can earn 5% cash back on Instacart purchases (grocery store deliveries only) when activated through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
  • Fitness Club and Gym Memberships: For those who’ve set a 2023 fitness goal, earning cash back on fitness club and gym memberships can help cardmembers make healthy choices for themselves and their wallets.

The Q1 2023 Chase 5% Cash Back Calendar offers some juicy categories for eligible cardholders. The addition of grocery stores (excluding Walmart) is a nice feature designed to go head-to-head with the Discover it Cash Back, which also features grocery stores for Q1 2023 (along with drug stores and select streaming services).

Target is an interesting category, as it provides groceries and practically everything else you can imagine – both online and in-store. Finally, fitness is an excellent category for January – especially with the untold millions making the usual health-centric New Year’s resolution.

Here is a look back at the 2022 Chase Freedom 5% Calendar:

5% Cash Back Category
January - March 2022 Groceries (excluding larger stores like Target or Walmart) and eBay
April - June 2022 Amazon.com and select streaming services
July - September 2022 Gas stations, car rentals, movie theatres, and select live entertainment
October - December 2022 PayPal and Walmart

Official Terms and Conditions

As with all 5% Cash Back Calendars, Chase offers specific rules and regulations regarding eligible purchases. The biggest caveat is that the 5% cash back applies to the first $1,500 in purchases in the quarter. Once a cardholder spends over $1,500, they will earn 1% cash back on all purchases until Q2 begins in April.

Other official terms and conditions from Chase:

Merchants who accept Visa/Mastercard credit cards are assigned a merchant code, which is determined by the merchant or its processor in accordance with Visa/Mastercard procedures based on the kinds of products and services they primarily sell. We group similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making rewards offers to you. Please note: We make every effort to include all relevant merchant codes in our rewards categories. However, even though a merchant or some of the items that it sells may appear to fit within a rewards category, the merchant may not have a merchant code in that category. When this occurs, purchases with that merchant won’t qualify for rewards offers on purchases in that category. Purchases submitted by you, an authorized user, or the merchant through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, online or mobile digital wallets, or similar technology will not qualify in a rewards category if the technology is not set up to process the purchase in that rewards category.
