The new Chase Freedom Flex has shaken up the hierarchy of the Chase credit card lineup. Chase is now looking to address this issue with a selection of updates to its flagship Sapphire cards.

Chase Sapphire Cards Now Earn Bonus Points On Groceries

Beginning November 1, 2020, both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve cards will enjoy a bonus multiplier on grocery store purchases. The Sapphire cards will earn bonus points on the first $1,000 in monthly spending on groceries through June 2021. The new bonus breaks down as follows:

Sapphire Reserve Statement Credit Change

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders are also receiving an extension to an earlier new way to use their $300 annual statement credit usually reserved for travel. Cardholders can use the credit towards gas and grocery purchases through June 2021. Previously, the new credit options were set to run through the end of 2020 only.

Other Sapphire Changes

Chase introduced the Pay Yourself Back program for Sapphire cards earlier this year. The program allows cardholders to receive statement credits. These credits offset the costs of purchases for grocery store, dining, or home improvement store purchases.

The program was initially slated to run through September 2020, but Chase extended that deadline through the first half of 2021. The company also extended the Pay Yourself Back promotion to other Chase cards, including the Freedom Flex and the Chase Freedom Unlimited.

Future Changes to Chase Sapphire Cards

Since the new grocery store bonus points are only limited, the mystery remains concerning the long-term plans for the Sapphire cards. Because of the Freedom Flex’s impressive features, expect further upgrades for the Reserve and Preferred cards to emerge in the future. BestCards will offer more information as it becomes available.
