The Q3 categories for the Chase Freedom Card are finally out. The Freedom Card is one of the most popular cash back credit cards on the market – thanks to the rotating 5% cash back categories. Here’s what you need to know about the new Chase Freedom 5% cash back categories for July through September:
What Are the New Chase Freedom Cash Back Categories?
The current Freedom categories, running through the end of June, include grocery stores and gym memberships. These categories are a letdown for cardholders, given that gyms across the U.S. are just now reopening after the initial coronavirus outbreak. Fortunately, Chase is ensuring the 5% categories for July through September are lockdown-proof.
The new categories for July through September include Amazon.com and Whole Foods. These 5% back options provide exceptional value – especially as Whole Foods offers delivery. This essentially extends the grocery category from April-June, giving Freedom cardholders up to six months of 5% cash back on groceries.
The new categories aren’t perfect, since not everyone shops at Whole Foods. Despite these limitations, however, they are a significant improvement on the current options – especially fitness clubs and gym memberships.
Bonus Categories for Other 5% Cash Back Cards
Discover It and the ABOC Platinum Rewards Mastercard are the other top cash back cards with rotating categories. Both cards announce all their categories in advance, unlike Chase. In some cases, this is great, as it offers potential applicants a chance to prepare their budgest ahead of time. In others, however, they cannot change rewards during pandemics.
Discover It offers excellent 5% back options for July through September: restaurants and PayPal. ABOC, on the other hand, offers 5X points on travel:
- Car Rentals
- Travel Agencies
While travel restrictions are easing, the value of 5X points in travel in the coming months will likely remain limited.
